I am looking for a composition head gasket with a compressed thickness of about .025" instead of the standard of about .038". By my calculations that would give me over .1 compression increase.
This is for a 73 454 and will be used with an aluminum head I'm going to buy. Steel shims are out since they won't work with an aluminum head.
Fel-Pro offers a .015 steel shim head gasket that has a coating of some sort to allow for use with aluminum heads for small blocks. I would expect that they offer the same for big blocks. The head and block surfaces must be perfectly flat for these to work so they are really only suitable for use after a rebuild.
I would have to agree with milling the heads to get the compression ratio that you want.

Re: Thinnest Head Gasket??? (1979toy)
I ended up use GM's, LS-7 BB head gaskets from Scoggins-Dickie. I could find no other suitible gasket for a BB with aluminum heads. Fel-pro makes them too but I think they're also 0.039, identical to GM's. I was at almost zero deck height so I ended up with about a 0.045 quench.
I can get the numbers if you want. I think they were about $30/pr.
