Thinking about going with the Fast Burn heads for the ZZ4 in our 82. What cam would go good with these heads? I know they claim that the HotCam will make 430HP with these heads, but I wanted to hear some other opinions as well. Thanks in advance.

Got a hot cam in my 89 formula with TFS orig Twisted Wedge heads, tons of mid range torq, only got 1.5 rockers, will be switching to 1.6 to get that little extra.
Hot Cam and Fastburn heads are a nice combo. The Hot Cam is really a pretty mild grind, but it should leave enough torque in the low end to work with the automatic in the 82. If it was a 4spd car, I'd look into something a little more radical. :D
I know the HotCam is a pretty mild grind. That's why I was asking for more opinions. :D
I was looking at the CompCams XR282HR, Part# 12-432-8
230/236 @ .050, .544/.555 w/ 1.6rr
Based on Comp's description, it sounds nice yet fairly streetable. We currently have a 2200-2400 stall in it right now with a built 700r4, and a 4.10 rear gear. That cam is said to make power between 2200-5800. Would this work well with the fast burn heads?
We still want it pretty drivable, but we want at least mid 12's in the 1/4 at the same time. Currently runs a 13.10-13.30 @98-100mph with a 1.75 60'. Dynoed at 252rwhp and 274rwtq on a Mustang Dyno (read: very conservative #'s).
After we get a mid 12 or better out of it, we're gonna slap some spray on it.
Please make suggestions if that's too much. I know that's a fairly common duration combo for modern LT1 cars, but what do I know about old carbed cars. :banghead:
If you want to meet up and see how my formula idles with the hot cam we can. It is not overly rough but does let you know it ain't stock, get lots of compliments on it.
Thanks Fevre, but I already know what a Hot cam idles like. A friend of mine has it in his LT1 Camaro. Its idle is a little mild for my tastes, but we're mostly concerned with power in this instance, the nice idle will just be a side benefit. :)
What would you guys recommend for a little wilder than the Hot cam, but still pretty drivable?
If you are shooting for 400+ hp and a streetable carbed car, then you are going to have a problem. Once you pass the 1hp per cu mark with a carb, you have to live with lope, vacuum, and compression issues. You may just want to save the money and add some more cubic inches or live with a grumpy car with a big cam. FI may get you where you want to be.
We've already got a FI car, not looking to go that route with this one.
Like I said earlier, once we get a solid mid-12 outta the car, Nitrous will come into the picture.
Lope doesn't bother us. We like lope. :D Vacuum problems is the only thing that we're really concerned about. What kinda cam did you have in mind when you stated that I could probably go with a larger cam than the Hot cam? What I really would like is a cam that best matches the characteristics of the Fast Burn heads, IOW a good heads/cam combo.
Not sure how many guys have the fast burns, but there are a lot of AFR's on the board. Maybe post a topic about Fast Burns and see if you get a reply. Also there are a very cam genius on the forum, so they will cut in.
Chevy High Performance Magazine did a series last year with the 383 crate motor with Vortec heads (cast iron fastburns) http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/57841 There are 4 articles in the series. They try a number of different combos of cams, manifolds, springs and I think even heads. They get enormous torque and hp numbers using the Comp XR282 cam. It is a really great article filled with a bunch of information. I think it'll answer a bunch of questions for you.
