Default Gauges Question

What are the differences in the actual guages from 68-78. I am replacing some of my 68 guages and was wondering what would work. Origionality is not an issue with this car. I would like to replace the non-funtioning oil pressure guage with an electric one from a later year. Seems like a few are always on ebay that include all gauges.

68-71s are green faced ,Oil gauge Mechanical all others electric
72-74s same gauge but white faced Oil gauge Mechanical all others electric
75-76 white bolder face,Orange Needle-all electric
77 By itself as far as cosmetics go,all electric
78-81/82 White face, white needles all electric/some 82s got a oil temp gauge instead of a clock, clock was LED display in radio.
Putting a Electronic oil gauge in one would require some drilling and the sending unit.

First you should try to fix the oil pressure guage. They usually can be fixed by just tapping on the inside mechanism and using a little oil on the movement. I have never seen one that couldnt be fixed.

The repop gagues, some have screws at 6 and 12 o'clock, some have rivets on the gague face. Original gague screws are at 3 and 9 o'clock.

THanks for the tip, some guy has a line kit for the mechanical on ebay so maybe I will just stay that way.

Jason,

I am sure that you have seen some, but you will admit that most are just stuck. I have seen many of these, and actually never seen any that leaked anywhere but the fitting. Modern fitting kits come with different fittings and one has to be careful to get it right. I guess that it is possible that some leak from the tupe, but the mechanism is about as simple as it comes. Most people do not need your services to get it going.

The originals had Rivets not screws, they were on the 3 and 9

Most of them are stuck, but most of them are corroded and need more than a simple spray cleaning with a shot of oil.To clean them correctly you need to pull the mechanism off the face and have it cleaned throughly. When you pull the face/needle off you loose calibration.

You'd think that if a company was going to the trouble and expense to tool up to do repop gauges they'd put the rivets in the original (correct) positions wouldn't ya??

Details, details.....what's wrong with some of these repop outfits? Don't they know how **** retentive we Corvette guys are about originality for Chrissakes??
