Default Complete cooling system

I am getting all the parts needed to overhaul the entire cooling system. I have an aluminum water pump, upper and lower rad hoses, both hoses to the heater core, overflow tank, new thermostat w/gasket, heater core.

I have read that the seals for the rad. support are important. Can I re-use mine?

Would it be easier to just remove the hood off the car to remove the rad? I am going to get it cleaned and sealed. I don't believe that it has many leaks if any at all. There was a pinhole leak but I used the stop sealant and it hasn't leaked since.

If there is anything that I should order before I get started let me know. Tips and tricks are appreicated too. its a 75 L-48 without AC.

Also , the heater core is located in the engine compartment ? just take the cover off? is this right? or do I need to take apart the dash (i hope not)?

To get the heater core out you have to take it out through the dash. You have to take the cover off from inside the engine compartment and then pull straight back on the air distribution box (the thing holding the heater core) from inside....after you've removed all the stuff in the dash so that you have room. Itsa job!!

Take the hood off like the previous poster said it's only a few bolts and a couple of minutes. Just mark where to line up the hinges before you take it off so you don't have to mess around lining it up again when you put it back.

Take the fan and thermo-clutch off your water pump. Then you can pull the shroud out followed by the radiator. You may want to lift the fan and shroud out at the same time so take them both loose. Give yourself some wiggle room so you don't damage the radiator (unless you're replacing it and don't care).

I'd be surprized if your old seals don't crumble and fall apart. I'd buy new ones. Heck, you're going to all this trouble, why let 20 more $$ get in your way? Your time's worth more than that.

Good Luck!

Hi Flood -

You may want to check out this post I did just last week:

Radiator Upgrade How-To

Definatly remove the hood. You'll need to in order to get the shroud out, unless you literally saw it in half!

Cheers,

Tony
