BB Block Numbers - Any Ideas?
Hi
A freind of mine has recently bought a '69 Vette with a Big Block engoine. He's sure it isn't a Vette block, but would like to know what it actually is. Any one good with block casting numbers? The casting numbner is apparently 361959, dated L7 78 (december 1978) and the config of the date code would suggest a Tonawanda block.
Per the Mortec site, http://www.mortec.com, that is a casting # is for a 73-90 454ci engine. Sounds like a very generic block.
Do you have the numbers off of the stamp pad (machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head [that would be U.S. passanger side :) ])?

Hi Tom
Thanks for that, that’s an interesting site that I haven’t seen before!
Alas, no, at the moment I don’t have any more on the block numbers than that. I’ve asked him for more info. He must know a little about it, as he knew (or believed0 it was a 454, as opposed to the 427 that it could have been. I’ll check back when I have more info!
Thankfully, we don't have the pain of changing to right hand drive like our Aussie friends, so yes, it's still the same passenger side for us:)
if it is a big block then it wouldnt be a vette block as 78 only came in 350 with casting numbers 3970010 376450 460703. here in australia it depends on which state you live in as to weather you have to convert to right hand drive. hope this helps
