At the risk of receiving a deluge of advice here's the deal:
I got a preliminary paint estimate (over the phone) from a Corvette specific paint & body shop. The price for a show quality high end paint job including chemically (no bead blast) stripping all the paint off without too much, if any, body work done, the price is $7500 (+/-). It goes up depending on body work done. The shop currently is doing a late sixties big block 'vert (it did have some panels replaced) and the estimate for something extensive like that would be $10,000 to $12,000 ( & I assume beyond).
My topic: is this what it costs to get it done right?

Re: C3 pro paint estimate (marky mark)
10 grand is the low end for a show job in Dallas. I'm talking national's, not some fast food weekend 10 buck trophy cruise in.
BTW, I prefer media blasting down to the original primer and hand working it from there, as opposed to chemical stripping... not that you need my advice.
I mentioned bead blasting to them and they say chemcal and razor blade to get all paint off. No bead blast for this operation I guess. They won 2 awards at the recent Ecklers show.
I guess their price is in the ballpark based on your figure from BIG "D".
Up here in Michigan I was shopping around, 1 placed had a 72 they were doing for 10k-they gave me an estimate of around a 1k- that was me stripping it and having it ready to shoot--they would seal it and shoot and buff out with warrenty--I actually dropping my 75 off to a shop close to my house guy runs it out of his house mom and pop type operation does hot rods---he gave me a price or $850 starting with him sealing and shooting paint and clear-and buffing out---it saves bid time it you strip your self--it not a lot of work it tons of work and a learning experinece---I'm not looking for a show car paint job- I'm looking to have nice paint and drive---good luck
if you want a show quality paint job...then thats a good deal. beyond that price means you need body work..if you want something more than show quality..somehting you walk through and looks slick as glass..expect to pay $10 grand. Its all time consuming...block sanding, and getting the fiberglass smooth and knowing how to work the seams.

Re: C3 pro paint estimate (SanDiegoPaul)
Can I get it done for 3 to 5 thousand in San Diego?
:flag
Probably, but not show quality.
It's getting to the point where it's cheaper to buy a booth, learn how to paint, and do it yourself. That's what I've decided to do. When the paint job becomes more expensive then a quality booth I draw the line.
Macco: Prep, shoot with base/clear, 4-year warranty $1,800 Canadian. Paint almost as good as any $10,000 job. Keep in mind witha bit of dust on the vette the maaco $1,800 job will be as good as $10,000 and believe me I have seen some real bad $10,000 paint jobs There is a thing of overdoing things. "It can only be NEW once".
I hope you are talking about a vehicle that will never see the street. Always transported in a box trailer. Never let people near it because it's roped off. ETC. Because that $10K+ paint job will quickly go downhill if you drive it. Anything that touches that paint job will mar it......
Around here $10K will buy you a paint job that is really-really-good from about 5 ft. away BUT the body had better be perfect before that first coat of paint!

Making the body perfect is what costs. While there is talent to laying on paint, the quality (mostly) and cost comes from prep work.

IF YOUR DOG WAS DEAD WE WOULD HAVE US A COUNTRY SONG!!!
I like your Sig. I am almost there divorced 3-years ago after a 15 year marriage Since then I have had 3 girl friends they lasted around 1 year each the last one just left me a few months ago. You guessed it that is when I bought the Vette. So what gives these days what are these gals looking for I thought our sex life was ok. Now looking for another babe, its kind of tuff finding a new Gal in a small town especially in the winter months. Start writing that song.
So..I should put away my roller and the left over paint from the kitchen.? Damn..!0k for paint..and then over to Walmart on a Sunday where some Joe/Jane lets a shopping cart roll in to it..Brings me to tears thinking about it..If ya got it to spend..why not..I guess..JMHO

I would hate to see what kind of paint job you could get for $1800 Canadian when the materials cost $1500 for a BC/CC paint.
I wouldn't let Maaco near a kids wagon let alone a Vette
Paul,
If you're thinking of painting your Vette, I have a great connection to get you what you want at a very good price. I'm having a car done right now that you can look at when I get it back in a week or so.
I should have said that the $7,500 estimate included all paint, with most of the cost attributed to the prep work (chemical striping, sanding, shaping, straightening panels etc). Does not include costs of any replacement fenders, hoods or other body panels.
I'm not really able to afford something this nice as I have to finish the engine first anyway. Just, if I did have the $, what would it cost to have it done "right".

Is that you again George

Actually, our buddy Georgie is not that far off kilter...a guy, two doors down has a 62 Pontiac Grand Prix, he prepped the car, drove to Maaco, had them shoot BC/CC, I drove him to pick up the car....I have to tell you, I would be hard pressed to spend a dollor over the 2500 price he paid...simply put, the job was gorgeous.
Here's a pic of a midyear I recently painted for a customer, all told the bill was $5600. Keep in mind I'm a small shop and am working cheaper than most in effort to draw business.
In most shops decent street paint on a Vette is around $7500, show paint usually starts at $10,000. Keep in mind that is having someone else do it all, there are plenty of ways to cut into that price by doing things yourself.
