My vette is burning oil in #3 & 4 cylinders. I haven't yet done a compression test yet but other than rings what else might cause this. Valve guides? Head gasket? Is it coincidence that these two pistons are opposite each other or could that indicate a particular problem. The engine does have some age and could certainly use and overhaul I'm sure but since this is basically a weekend driver I just don't want to get into that expense right now. Think a ring and valve job might buy some time? That is something that would be within my weekend warrior capabilities.
valve guides & valve stem seals. If it''s those you will only see smoke on starrtup, when you do a full out blast and let off the gas and the thing starts to smoke then, then it''s most likely the rings.
Rings are a bad thing, in that it spells rebuild. You can re-ring the motor, but if you're going to go so far as to pull the motor, you may as well go all the way.
Valve seals are pretty simple to fix. It's an afternoon job. If it's the seals, throw some new springs in while you're at it.
It smokes primarily on start up. I haven't noticed if it smokes after releasing full throttle. Any other diagnostics I can do to tell for sure if its the rings or valve seals. Can't rings be done with the engine in the car?
A leakdown test can be done that will show you where the leakage is coming from. Valve stem seals are the most likely culprit, if you have engine smoke on initial startup.
Rings can be done with the engine in the car, but it is a biotch to do, and it probably won't end up doing much good. If your rings are gone then the cylinders are probably not in good shape. You are still going to have to hone the cylinders, which is tough with the block still in car.
The final topper is that it is much easier to pull the engine and work on it than to try and do anything like that under the hood. By the time you pull the heads, manifold, etc. it will be more work than just pulling the motor our and doing the disassembly on an engine stand. Engine stands are not expensive and will speed your dissassembly and reassembly many times.
