Default Heater box

Just gutted the interior on my 79 this morning. When I started to disassenble the heater duct assemblys I opened the trap door that directs the air to the defrosters. Looking in to see the heater core I noticed that there was a piece of sheet metal with a jagged cut to it blocking the air flow from the heater core to the air box. It was located richt where the firewall is. Seems pretty solid couldn't move it any direction. Is this norm or do I need to remove this air flow resticter...

It belongs there. Mine has the same thing (also a 79 w/AC). I figured it was there to make the air flow through / past the heater core more linear with the selector position. I'm guessing the odd jagged shape has something to do with cutting down the air flow noise.
