My smallblock is leaking a little oil from the bottom end (front and rear seals) so I am going to do a reseal. I figured while I had the pan down, I would change the oil pump (due to the fact it has 180,000 original miles on it).
My question is, the replacement oil pump I bought has both the high pressure spring (installed) and the standard pressure spring (in a little bag). Should I use the higher pressure spring, knowing my oil clearances are looser now due to wear or should I use the standard spring and just live with the slightly reduced oil pressure caused by the worn bearings.
Can you think of any reason why the higher pressure spring might be a bad idea?
Thanks
hey, i'm local! if you need a hand, let me know.
it's my opinion that you would be better off just using the standard spring rate. my bet is that your drop in oil pressure is due as much to wear inside the pump as it is to slop in the bearings. be careful though! unless your pump is designed specifically for the corvette, you may have clearance problems with the pan. i just bought a 'generic' hi volume pump from summit for mine last year only to discover it was 3/8" taller than the factory pump.
have you thought of replacing at least the rod bearings while your in there? i replaced my rod and main bearings at one point with the engine still in the car but that was during a clutch change when nothing was mounted to the crank anyway and i could drop it all the way down. if yours is an auto, or if you plan on keeping the tranny in there, mains may not be an option.
Thanks Gary! The paperwork with the pump states its a "high volume, high pressure pump" so I think, considering your advice, I will go with standard press spring and leave it at that.
Thanks again and thanks for the "help" offer. BTW, where is a good place to have machine work done here in Vegas?
i think you mean loco. but just exactly what is bryan saying??? :skep: that was just a normal day for me.
ghost, the only guy i know that has a good reputation is tom smythe at performance engineering. his shop is over off main street just north of charleston. he's one of those guys who seems kind of pissy because he's a perfectionist, but that's what makes him good.
He was mumbling something about you munching on a donut with one hand, holding your coffee with the other, and steering with your knee going around a corner about twice as fast as was safe. all the while yelling. "Hey Cletus, Look at me now !!!!!".
