How much HP are these good for? From what I've been able to read I figure about 400HP at 9.5:1 compression and 5500 RPM.
Sound about right?
blunsford:
I ran the stock short-block from my '79 Z28 (LM-1: 2-bolt block, cast crank, 'standard' rods, cast pistons, etc.) with a hydraulic cam & 64cc heads (approx 9-.93:1 CR) for a long time, shifting @ 5500 with no problems ever.
3600 lb Z28 went 14.30s @ 97 with 3.42 gears; I'm guessing an 'honest' 320-340 HP (?).
A few guys I know run cast pistons to 6000 RPM, but they keep the cr below 10:1, and don't even THINK about N2O.....
About what I put mine through but took em to over 6000 a few times. Probably not the best for longevity but I knew that eng would not stay in the car long.
Cast/hypereutectic are very good pistons and actually strong then forged, cost alot less and can be run alot tighter. The reason hypereutectic pistons were not around years ago is because it was difficult to keep the sulpur suspended in the aluminum matrix plus tooling had to improve to machine a hyper piston.
You can use them with 100 horse shot of nitrous and blower aplications.
The problem with cast is they do not forgive, they are brittle and if pushed beyond their limit they fracture like glass.
Forged while weaker and also ductile and bend without breaking.
For the dollar cast are good.
:iagree: I've run cast pistons in almost every street motor I've owned( I prefer the tighter fit, quiet and better oil control) and some have been hammered on pretty hard without a piston failure...
