i just got the car and have been working on different projects and the amp gauge does not work. Does anyone have any surgestions short of buying a new one.

When you say it does not work, do you mean the needle doesn't move or is there a different manifestation that leads you to believe it's defective? The needle on mine doesn't move much, if at all, but I'm not sure that means it's bad. :skep:
If the needle moves .as in its reading something (not moving from just vibrations) The gauge is fine...These gauges burn very easily if its smoked buying a new or used is about yoru only option.

You can fix this by dismantling the gauge and replacing the copper insulated wire which is forming the coil.
You have to look for the same wire thickness in for example an old junk transformer, and wind it in the same maner as the old wire, then strip the ends with a lighter or something and solder it back in place.
