Default birdcage rust ???

hi, i'm going to look at a 76 tonight. price seems good. how do i check for rust in birdcage area. i belive car sits covered outside. thanks, john

That's hard without taking things a part.The easist area to ckeck is behind the kick panels. You will need to remove the sill plates to get them out. Then you can use a flashlight and look up inside the post. Also you can check te #2 mounts at that time. That will giveyou a pretty good idea of the condition of the rocker channels.

Check all around the windshield frame as well. Look for signs of leaking or rust stains. Also check around the base of the windshield pillars where it joins to the cowl. Don't forget to crawl under and look the frame over thoroughly, especially around the kickups in front of the rear wheels. Poke around with a screwdriver or tap around with a hammer if you have to.

As said, remove sill plate and look at the drain plug holes if you rust around the holes beware. Remove the kick grills if you can,there's one screw forward to hold it in once the sill are removed. This will give access to the #2 mount. IF you can get into the rear wheel well, remove the access panel to look at the #3 mount area. Look down the windshield frame and across the top for any buckling.
