Default Center gauge cluster wiring question

On the center gauges, does it matter how the harness connectors go onto the gauge prongs? For example, on the ammeter I have a 2-prong connector (one solid black wire, and a black wire w/white stripe). Does it matter which prong the solid black wire portion of the plug connector is installed on? Same goes for the multi-wire connectors for the water and fuel gauge.
This is all for a 1970.

Yes, there is a ground side and a signal side for the gauges.

It does make a difference how the gauge is wired in.

The plugs if not keyed to only go on one way, have a Color designation near the post. ie: y= yellow, Bl= black' Bl/w= black with white strip.

It won't affect the Ammeter, it would just read backwards. Some have a ground, a signal, and power. If you hook it up wrong I think it might damage the gauge. Get a good wiring diagram and go slow.
