Spreader Bars...Whos Got One
I am gonna order one in the next day or so. I was just wondering who all has one and what are your opinions on it. Did you get the welded version or unwelded. I think I am gonna get the welded version since I have no clutch/fan on the front of mine.
I have the welded one on my 71 BB. I think it works but it's hard to say. I like the extra re-inforcement as I hear the frame is likely to crack in these areas over the years. Install was easy. It makes alignments slightly more complicated as the bar has to be loosened.
I just picked mine up at the Carlisle show this year, and to be honest I can't tell much difference from a "handling" standpoint. I did notice a more solid feel when hitting ruts in the lovely Pa. roads though.I got the prewelded model since I run an electric fan,and the install was cake.
I also have the welded one. I have not had the car aligned since the bar install or since the Grand Sport wheels. For the price and ease of install there really is no reason not to have one. Plus it looks cool!!

Re: Spreader Bars...Whos Got One (74 vert)
Mine is on the way. I couldn't stand it any longer. I have wanted one for a long time. I first saw it on Red73s car and have been intrigued since. I feel like it should add to the ridgity of the front suspension. Should be here by the weekend hopefully.
I added the unwelded one to my 1973 about 10 years ago after installing urethane bushings and setting the car up for autocrossing. I do know that after installing it, I could easily twist the bar by hand on the bearings. But as soon as I jacked the car up using the front crossmember it was too tight to twist by hand. This tells me there was more give in the front suspension than I would ever have imagined. It does seem to stiffen up the front suspension when going over rough pavement.
I would recommend installing the unwelded bar if you still have the stock fan in your small block. It's not difficult to fit it, mark the location of the brackets and have them welded. That way you know it will always fit if after switching to electric fans you decide to return to the stock setup at a later date. Of course it will fit with electric fans in either case.
I put one on my 63 and noticed a difference right away. A friend said he could change the camber on alignment machine by turning the bar by hand. They are so cheap and it really works. If you have fan and shroud you would probably be better to get the unwelded type so you can put the bar in the best place possible. Good luck

Re: Spreader Bars...Whos Got One (silverslashstreak)
Got my spreader bar this afternoon. UPS delivers again. Nicely powder coated with two heim joints. Should be installed sometime tomorrow. Look for the post with pics.
