Default Factory Headers?

I was looking at my exhaust manifolds today on my 81, and they look like headers. Did the 81's come stock with headers? They look like a really good design, so my question is, if they are factory, is there any benefit to be had by swapping them out with aftermarket headers?

Yeah, they're called factory headers by some people. From what I've heard though, they aren't anything worth writing home about.

Go with headers! :D

Here is a pic of my stock 81 headers. I took them off the other month and u will find a lot of weld dags inside. This is what u get from mass production.

I swapped my stock '81 "shorty Headers" out for some Dynomax full length jobs. They've definately helped at the upper rev range. If you pull off the stock Headers & eyeball them you'll see that they are quite restrictive. With the stock "Headers" & dual pipes mine ran pretty good. Fitting Dynomax Headers & an "H" pipe in the system has made it even better & I've had to change the secondary needles as it was running lean at the top end (which proves that either the Headers or the "H" pipe) improved exhaust scavenging.
