I bought mine from corvette world, but I believe every vendor has the setup or the pieces to make it. It is comprised of the base, inner screen, outer screen, in hood filter, and the lid for the inner screen.
Does the one my my sig pic look better? It is 3 1/2 inches. :)
I did not think an additional 1 1/2 inches would so different. I guess it is a good think I did not get the 6 incher which is something that crossed my mind.

And I bet it costs CONSIDERABLY MORE than that monster in the pic!!
(and it works considerably BETTER!) :D
Someone posted a study a while back about different filter sizes. I remember it was from a magazine article and they uses different type filters, paper and oil impregated (K&N) and also different sizes/configurations. They took a baseline dyno without any filter at all and then tried a bunch of different sizes....small diameter, large diameter, short, and tall. They showed in the end that the size didn't matter all that much. In fact, I think the large diameter, short filter performed the best....something like only 5hp loss from no filter. They even tried stacking 2 filters on top of each other!
Now, I don't remember much about the engine, whether the 'choke' could have actually been exhaust or something funky that scewed the results but since then I haven't worried about stuffing the largest filter I can get under there.
The filter subject is one that gets debated almost as much as "which oil should I use".
Here's a comparison at Amsoil's website but EVERY maker of air filters, oil, etc makes claims that their's is best. I have heard that running NOTHING on the carb is a BAD idea though. Even for race-only cars it's not good. At the very least a venturi stack should be used to help "straighten" the air as it comes into the carb. Air filters also do this "straightening" thing.

This sounds like something my wife said :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:
Actually looks OK to me. (Since you didn't go for the airbox, anyway.)
I remember reading an air cleaner article couple or three years back an article in one of the magazines. I forget what testing methods they used, but the upshot of the whole thing was that taller elements are "better."
I think I would go for one of those K&N filtered tops becasue it looks like you may actually have the room to take advantage of it. Then save up for an airbox.
Actually, what it looks like doesn't mean DOODLY SQUAT! The problem (besides it looking ugly..hehe) is that when you close the hood you are sucking in ENGINE HEAT. The L-88 setup isolates the carb from the engine heat and allows it to suck in nice cool clean fresh air.
