Default three speed to 700R4

What would it take , cost and parts , to convert my 71 3 speed to a 700R4?
What benefit would it give me if any?

Well, the trans is going to be the biggest cost of course. Some years are better than others. I can't remember what years right now, but someone will pop in. Tou'll need a torque convertor. You can alter your crossmember or buy a tubular one from BTO. You'll either need to buy or fabricate the TV cable and bracket on the carb. A new dipstick is needed. You shifter will have to be modified or replaced and your driveshaft will have to be shortened and rebalanced. If you go with a 200R4 you don't have to get the driveshaft shortened.

Plan on spending a couple of thousand dollars. Check out http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com -- most of us around here who've done the conversion used their products. The benefits of overdrive are great if you do any significant highway driving -- instead of turning 3000 rpm at 70 mph, you'll be cruising along at 2000 rpm. The car runs much cooler and engine life is greater.

If, however, your car is only used for short runs it simply ain't worth it. :seeya

$1800 is about what it cost me for my 200R4. Good money spent for my intended use. I drive on the E-way a lot including the trip to NCM every year. Especially with the 3.55 rear gear installed.
