The repair kits stink. Basically just a brass female compression joint union. You lose almost half the ilumination with this splice, even if you do it perfectly. With all the fiber optic stuff being used today, why can't we locate a simple spool of the stuff? The fitted or crimped on ends don't look that complicated either. I am more than capable of wrapping my own bundle with tape if need be. The factory fiber optics consist of a bundle of very small fibers for each cable, perhaps about 15-20 fibers per cable for each light. I don't know if it would make any difference to use one larger cable or the bundle of smaller ones. Feedback by those that know would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen f/o cable at some craft stores, but only in 3 foot max lengths.

I have a stupid question? Should the console optics be lit up with all the lights working or should they be unlit until on of the lights goes out?

They shold light up for each light that is illuminated. If light is off they should be dark.

brs6482,

B/B/Orange confirms why this forum is such a great place. This is exactly what I have been looking for, but until now, couldn't find. My front harness is perfect, the back one was a little messed up when I got the car 30 years ago. For $99, his new rear harness does not seem unreasonable. I would expect to spend an hour if I had all the parts to repair it which means it would really take me 3+ hours at a minimum. I can make or save more money doing something else.

Someone else asked a question about when they light up. There is nothing electrical in the operation of these fiber optics as they illuminate at the dash other than the actual tail light, turn signal lamp, headlight, license plate lamp that shines the light down the fiber. If you had all the car lights off and someone shined a flashlight at one of your tail lights, the dash f/o would be illuminated.
