Default Cam purchased for engine

I have finally broken down and ordered my cam for the new engine. This time I opted for a cam from a local outfit Schneider Racing Cams, based near my home, ground me the following specs.

Which is very similar to the cam reccommended to me by the Crower tech, also near where I live.

Intake 269 duration 214 @ .050" .474" lift exhaust 278 duration 220 @ .050" .498" lift 114 lobe center.

By comparison the ZZ-4 cam I believe has the following specs

Intake 208 @ .050" .474" lift exhaust 221 @ .050" .510" lift 114??? lobe center

and the Hot cam for the same engine is listed at....

Intake 218 @ .050" .525" lift exhaust 228 @ .050" .525" lift ??? lobe center

So depending on how you read these specs this cam choice lies somewhere in between the ZZ-4 and the Hot cam..being much closer to the ZZ4 spec mostly.

I was planning on running 1.6 rockers on the exhaust at least and perhaps both intake and exhaust, but those parts arent ordered yet. The cam requires the OEM mellonized gear, purchased from a local dealer. I will run OEM roller lifters because ....well because I can....

Don't forget the ZZ4 and Hot cam are both hyd roller cams so they will open and close with much steeper ramps than a hyd flat tappet cam so will give more actual flow if the lift and duration are the same as the hyd flat tappet cam. I am running a similar cam as you in a 383 right now and it has some very good low end grunt.

Where did you get the data from to decide what grinds you wanted?

The first thing I did was contact every cam tech line I could find for their recomendations based on the information I gave them. I then read a poopie pot of books and tech articles about cams to try to better understand what it all meant.

I then Visited Crower Cams in person (but frankly didnt get far that way) So I went to Schneider Racing Cams. these guys have been in business for ages, they were THE guys to go to if you ran an offy. In fact, and I didnt know this but Schneider and Bruce Crower were once business partners. The guy running Schneider now used to be one of Crowers guys.

He and I sat down and looked at what I wanted, he suggested a slight change to one of their standard designs, their standard cam had more duration on the exhaust side than this one.

Four days later I picked this up http://earchitect.50megs.com/corvett...ne/er06-11.jpg

I know that you must have your reasons, But this is just an observation on my part.

I originally pulled out my L-82 cam and installed an Schneider Racing Cam. It was some kind of RV H-Flat design with something like 266 advertised. Well to my great disapointment with all that money and effort it ran about the same as the stock L-82. Maybe a stop watch could tell the difference.

I do know that HR cams will run better than a flat cam of the same specs, so keep us posted on your observations once you get it running.

Well,i dont feel bad about this selection...we have all probably made bad cam choices in the past, the fact that this is virtually identical to a cam suggested by another manufacturer, and that it is very nearly the same as a zz-4 cam (this one being a bit warmer IMO) I doubt that I will get the same result.

Still it remains to be seen and I will be reporting the outcome when the new engine goes in.
