This guy claims the following: the apollo 11 corvette was made for by GM to present to the Apollo 11 crew when they came back from their expedition into space... the popularity and demand for this car was so strong that gm decided to make 40 more... this is 38/40
Is this true?
The way the guy goes on about this car, I doubt it, but I was just wondering.
I've seen one of the 3 Apollo 11 'vettes that were given to Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin. If I remember they were 69 models, they were the one year only color of Riverside Gold with Black trim, and they were all 427 cars. I've never heard mention of any 70 model special editions. So I call :bs
I got a close look at one of these (69 L36) cars at the NCRS national. Who knows what else GM may have done in a later model year? Who am I to fly the :bs flag just because I never heard or read a word about what this guy is posting on ebay?? huh? MJ
As the article above indicates, there were no "Apollo 11" vettes. The "Apollo" vettes were purchased at a special price by the crew of Apollo 12 before their mission launched. If you've seen HBO's From the Earth to the Moon series, you've been treated to the sight of the replica's of those legendary cars. Many of the space program's participants drove corvettes but nobody was "presented" with one for making a flight.

This ad is pure, unadulterated :bs
:iagree:
The Apollo Vettes were for Apollo 12, as shown in the article above from Corvette Magazine. There were only 3 to begin with, in gold and black. The e-bay auction is total :bs and has no documentation.
However, for a 1970 Vette, w/ no reserve and a 3K bid price, it might be a deal to steal it away from that tool.
The seller cancelled the auction (again).. Those people are violating the spirit of a NO RESERVE auction.. If the car doesn't get what they want - they cancel the auction so they don't have to sell for the high bidder
Here is a picture of the Apollo car that was at Hershey this summer:

IMO - a weird paint scheme. Note the red/white/blue emblem above the Stringray script.

I've always liked this car (one of my other hobbies is collecting Apollo-era NASA paraphenalia). I kinda like the gold/black paint scheme. I talked to the owner at a show in Austin a few years ago. The red/white/blue emblem pertains to each of the Apollo 12 astronauts. Each of them had color matched accessories on board, i.e. red, white, or blue towels, toothbrush, etc. This particular car belonged to Alan Bean, the Lunar Module Pilot. His accessories for the flight were blue. If you look closely at the emblem, the initials LMP are written in the blue rectangle on his car. The other two astronauts had their assignment initials in the corresponding white or red square.
