I have a performer RPM manifold on my car, its a 79 L-82 with a speed demon, youre gona have to get a drop base air cleaner, their is no way the snorkel will fit, i did feel a slight diffrence in performance, plus its the only way to fit a 4 barrel carb and get rid of all the emmissions equipment... Id say its worth it especially if youre getting a nice holley or demon carb, no point in wasting money on your Q-jet, a Q-jet will always still only be a Q-jet.  :D
The Edelbrook manifold is a direct replacement for your stok manifold with a little improvement. The RPM is about 5/8" taller and will require the drop base air cleaner. The RPM will give you more topend if the rest of your engine allows it (cam, heads, carb,etc...). The preformer will increase lowend power.
Thanks guys.
i wanna go with the original snorkel air cleaner.. which i had always thought 'was' actually a drop base design?.. am i right?... i don't think you could drop it much more or ot would hit stuff like the egr valve and cruise control bracket etc... or am i wrong? maybe there's something i haven't seen yet?
The snorkel isnt a drop base design, also there really is no way of keeping it if you want to get a better carb, or manifold. We actually had a drop base cleaner on with the stock intake and it didnt interfer with anything.
No, i think i tried it once and it didnt work. why do you want to keep the snorkel so badly? Its one of those parts that helps but that you can live w/o. Plus think of the benefits of a new carb/intake. For us the Q-jet was living hell. Always had to tune the mixtures, never started, to many problems to list with these old carbs. Sell the snorkel on the parts for sale/wanted section. :D
AW! .... do you KNOW how long it took me to track down an original '79 snorkel intake in England??!!!!
...... i've grown kinda' attatched to it!
Hmmmm, i suppose it's a tough decision i shall have to make
As for the Q-jet.... well yes, i think it's probably pretty poo as far as old carbs go... but i'm not sure if Santa will stretch to a carb and birthday's not untill August :D
but thanks for the info... i would be pretty peeved if i had just bought the intake and then couldn't close the bonnet! :smash:

This may be a stupid question, by why can't you add a drop base to the OEM snokel, aren't the snorkels on the lid?
The snorkel is one piece, except for the cover, you cant just take out the bottom,
I may be wrong about the hood cleareance because im basing my knowledge on a performer RPM and i just went on the edelbrock website and it says that the performer is quite a bit shorter, so it might fit, but i HIGHLY doubt it. I suggest waiting for a bit and save up some money to get an intake and carb, also I dont know about you but i decided to go with the performer RPM because you can fit ANY carb on it, and it only cost 6 dollars more, so if I were you id just wait it out and get the performer RPM with a road demon 625, how are the emmisions laws in england? because the performer RPM lets you get rid of all the emmisons junk that just clutters up the engine bay and restricts the engines performance.
Sorry for any confusion i always thought they were the same size :cry :(
emissions laws are pretty tight, but for a car this age it would be no problem. I think alot of my stuff is disconnected anyway, and i'm running a dual exhaust with no CAT.... it always gets through the annual test no prob.
I have the Edelbrock Performer EGR on my 81 with the stock Q-Jet and air cleaner. I had to replace the stock 1/4" carb to manifold gasket with a paper thin one. My air cleaner lid is closer to the hood than before, but it doesn't hit.
Ahhh... that sounds promising..... and i think the '81 hood is exactly the same as the '79.. so it should probably work in my car... if i get a Waffer thin gasket!
