I have a 68 that was originally a 427 and now has a 73 454 with an Edelbrock 2SPS (dual plane) and a 650 Holley double pumper. The wing nut that holds the air cleaner lid on has cracked the paint on the hood because there is not enough clearance. The air cleaner lid is as far down on carb as it can get (without interference with the choke plate. Is the manifold too tall? If so what do I need.
That's a real problem with 68-72 BB's with stock hoods. An L-88 hood is one option. A stock 68-72 CORVETTE only manifold will also correct the problem. Other than that there are no choices. I do think there is one manifold made as I have seen this mentioned on the forum one time.
The manifold in question is the 1971 LS-6 aluminum manifold. They will clear the big block hood and allow a normal type air cleaner. But they are for rectangular port heads...so oval port heads won't work. They are also quite rare and pricey. I'd sell mine for $450. :)
I could replace the stud with a screw, that wouldn't be a problem but do you guy's see a problem with the air cleaner lid rubbing on the bottom of the hood? Also, is there some material that I can put on the lid and then close the hood (so that the material deforms to the clearance witout springing back), so that I can actually see how much/little I have? In addition, I would hate to do it because I have too many other projects, but I could mill the top of the intake down a little.

Orrrrr....you could do like this intelligent guy in this thread recommends and all your problems would be solved :D
