Default Need help with brake light

On my 77, automatic, the passenger side brake light comes on much dimmer then the drivers side. I changed the bulb, same problem. The filiment for the lights comes on when you step on the brakes, not the brake filiment. With the lights on, when you step on the brakes, the light goes out. The directional works fine. Any ideas where to looks for a short?
Thanks
Gil

Are you sure you have the bulb screwed in right? Sometimes when the socket gets a little worn its possible to put the bulb in backwards. That puts the contact for the brake light up to the contact for the tail light. also could be a short in the socket ore even a dirty socket. Clean it out and check for contact alignment. Hold the bulb in the same position as it would be if it were installed. Then look at the position of the contacts in the socket in relation to the position of the contacts on the bulb if it were installed. Im not sure on the vette sockets, but on other sockets ive seen where the contacts shift in position. Then they dont line up with the bulb when installed.

I was going to suggest a faulty ground but if you are sure the "brake/directional" filament is not lighting on brake than it is a different problem. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in, I think I remember reading that all light functions go through the steering column.....

Best of luck.

Thanks for responding. I cleaned up the contacts and they look OK. I guess I will start checking with a voltmeter and see what I find.
