The dash is way too light in color. The silver interior on the pace car is much more silver than that. Also, there should be a metallic logo at the bottom of the bottom of the center console that says "25th Anniversary". Third, the seats are wrong as mentioned. Chris@Vettefinders had the original leather/cloth setup and it's the same bolstering as the other Pace Car (79-82) seats, except the inner pieces are cloth instead of leather. (Only about 3" in from either side is leather.) If you do need pictures of my Pace Car, let me know, but rest assured that this one is a fake. Pace Car vins should be 1z87L8s90xxxx or 1z8748s90xxxx. The L is for an L-48, 4 is for an L-82.
Pace cars came with either auto or manual, and could be had with either engine. They came standard with cruise, power doors locks/windows, A/C, rear defroster, deluxe sound system (CB optional), comfort package and others. Basically, the only option was the CB, Gymkhana suspension (which mine had stock - I'm so proud of you baby ;) ), and the powerplants.
Paul, those are NOT pace car seats, they may be for a regular 78, the new seats were for pace cars and I think were an option for 78, they were made stock as of 79. ...LT
They were not a factory option for 78 cars. You could always buy them and install them yourself, of course. But I don't think that's the definition of option we're using here... ;)
The later years in St Louis saw some pretty poor quality cars being produced. These cars were notorious for showing cracks/lines along the front and rear fender bonding strips. One friend even got the dealer to repaint his 77 over this.
In 1977 it was rumored that St Louis had a bunch of cars sitting around that couldn't be shipped due to mismatched interiors. My 77 purchased new had the Oyster interior and there were significant mismatches in the interior color. Dash didn't match door panels and seats didn't match either of them. Unfortunately the interior problems carried over to the 78's as well so it's entirely possible to have an original car with mismatches, particularly with the oyster interior. It was a great car never-the-less.
I just talked to the guy on the phone. He says it is a Pace car replica. He put that in his add. I have seen a lot of 78 Pace cars for sale. I am pretty sure they are all replica's unless they actually were track cars, correct? Do the original Pace cars, six thousand odd number of them, come with either engine?
This one is a regular 78 L48 auto car with the pace car paint scheme added 12 years ago.
Techincally YES, there were three actual pace cars at the race. The 6,502 made by GM were "replicas". What this guy has is a 78 that was repainted and tried to make look like a pace car (or replica) and did a very half a$ $ed job
Re: What's wrong with this picture? (Chris@VetteFinders)
One other note, ONLY, again ONLY 6502 cars were made with code "19/47". This paint code of "19/47" will denote a Black/Silver paint combo found only on the "6502" true Pace Cars. Check this also. This code is found on the "trim tag" on the driver's side pillar post as you open the driver's door. This tag also has the build date of the car as well as the code for the interior, either 15C for Silver Cloth OR 152 for Silver Leather.
