Re: What headers available for '73 454??? (rponfick)
Be sure and check out Blkbelts post in the C2 forum. The same comments probably apply to C3s.
  How so? The C3 is a completely different car. I would guess I'd need specific headers for clearance issues. Though I could be wrong, I'll do a little more searching in the C2 archives too.
I would think the Hedman 1 3/4" primary BBC C3 headers (P/N 68090 ?) or equivalent would be your best bet. I've never used them personally (yet), but the smallish primary tubes should be the least intrusive for spark plug clearance, etc.. Don't know what you mean by hacking up the car, but you will have to cut and re-configure the rest of your exhaust to mate up with the headers at the very least.
Re: What headers available for '73 454??? (72 Stingray)
How do you think about the quality of Hedmans? I know the C4 guys stay away from them.
I don't mind hacking up the exhaust, I just didn't want to modify anything like wheel wells, firewall, etc...I saw a 69 one time with sidepipes and the rocker panel was cut to fit them.
My motivation is to be able to put the car back to stock since it's a numbers matching car.
If you're trying to hold the cost down, Hedman's are a decent choice.
If you are looking for a true performance header at a higher cost, Hooker Super Comps are the way to go. Both brands fit without hacking up the body, although you may have to modify the a/c bracket with a little grinding.
Save the exhaust pipes you cut out. You can have them rewelded into place if you go back to the stock manifolds.
Hope this helps.
I realize there is a difference between C2s and C3s, but if Hooker Super Comps fit as badly on C3s as they did for the proper application on a C2, you may be sorely disappointed. I participated in the install described in the Blkblt post on the C2 forum (that took place last weekend), so I feel information may be timely. It was a disaster, the owner is now taking them off.
All I am saying is be sure to get feedback from people that have actually done what you decide to do, and not only rely on the manufacturers recommendations.

From experience, I hold the exact same philosophy, that's why I wanted to find out specifics.
Ok, I bought 2 sets of them.. the first set lasted about 6 years, and the second set were on for 2 years when I sold the car. I bought the one's with the 2" pimary tubes. It was about the easiest installation you could ask for IMO. Mine was a 4-speed car, no power anything, except engine that is.
If you want all the hype of being able to say you run "Hooker Headers" by all means go for it. For me Hooker's great for the off the wall applications, or for pure racing application. But for the common man, who does pay attention to price, I think you'll be quite happy with the Hedmans.
Note: Beware the #1,#3 spark plugs, with the 2" primaries, it was kinda a pain with the plugs and wires. A smaller primary tube might make life a bit easier when changing plugs.
How much can I expect to pay approximately for some coated 2" hedmans?
IMHO, if you're running an otherwise stock '73 454 I think you would be better served to run the smaller primary version. 1 3/4" tubes will support well over 500hp and not sacrifice low-end torque like the bigger ones WILL on a mild, low-reving motor.
Another choice are the 1 7/8" primary hooker super comps, no clearance issues with mine and the primaries aren't so large to lose the bottom end grunt.
My headman headers with 2 inch primary tubes are 14 years old, wrapped and I have never had a problem. They fit really easy and I have them in and out about every 2 years for some modification, but not to he headers.
When I got them I didn't want the pipes to run too close to the transmission so I made a cut through the middle of the collector then rotated the cut until the collectors pointed straight back and parallel to the ground and rewelded. I them modified the cross member to accept a 3 inch pipe running straight back.

I have the 1 7/8" hooker super comps. They fit well and I haven't had any problems with them. I dynoed with stock manifolds and then headers and picked up almost 60 hp and 90 something torque. They work!
