hey there i was wondering if anyone knew of any good, reputable machine shops in virginia, preferably near richmond or chesterfield. also what do yall think i should have done to the heads? they are 487 heads i believe...71 LT-1 with 1.94/1.5 valves and 75cc chambers...basically what i want to do is get the heads shaved down to 65cc, port, polish, 3 angle valve job, then have them flow benched so i can choose a cam...what do you think?
thanks,
marshall

Have you considered a set of new GM Performance Parts VORTEC heads? They are not real expensive and seem to work well.
yeah, i did consider that, but if i got those, i would just want to have them taken farther, and plus, this way i can have matching numbers while doing what i want to the motor
If they are truely 1.94 heads they did not come off an LT1 car. The 487 heads are correct but hey could have come from a standard small block. Not that it makes any difference if you are going to have them ported and worked on. Pretty good heads for production heads. You might want to think about the money you are going to put into these vs a new set of heads. Most of the newer heads flow better andwill give better results for about the same price. I had my LT1 heads reworked with all new parts and stuff. Then went to out of the box AFR heads. A huge difference in performance.
I have used a place in Hopewell called "The Shop". I am not sure Lewis is in business anymore or he has just moved. I also have heard good things about Redline Performance Machine but I have not used them personally.
Also... don't forget when you shave heads, the intake ports slide lower and you can have intake mismatch & sealing problems. All depends on how much you shave and which combination of heads & intake you have.
Lewis is still in business, but they moved somewhere east of Hopewell - I'm not sure where.
There's a good place in Hanover Air Park called Competition Engine Services. Ph# 798-1675, guy's name is Billy Duke. I just took two sets of BB heads to him yesterday for my boat. A lot of us boater-types use him..
they are in fact 71 LT-1 heads...they changed the heads on the LT-1 in 71 as opposed to the 70 LT-1 heads...i think i just need to talk to some of those shops yall mentioned, thanks...any more?
