Default aluminum Intake Manifold

I just took off my L82 Alum. Intake. I'm planning on sandblasting it. What is the best paint for it? Is this the best gasket http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=FPP%2D1204
I'm also on planning on removing the EGR and heat stove and block the crossover. I converted to elec. choke, I already removed the heat riser from the exhaust manifold.

Ummm.. as far as i know the L-82s didnt have aluminum manifolds, they were iron, you can EASILY tell by the weight of them. May i suggest getting a performer RPM, it has no EGR valve and no emmisons equipment on it whatsoever. Fel-pro usualy makes the best gaskets, so it should work pretty well.

The L82s did come with an aluminum intake manifold. They were just an aluminum version of the cast iron manifold. If you are going to remove all that stuff why not just replace it with a Performer intake. It will flow better and look better without the EGR holes and block offs. Why are you going to paint an aluminum manifold. They are fine just cleaned up.

Thats odd, when i bought my performer RPM it weighed SO MUCH less than my stock manifold, by at least 20 lbs. I could barely lift the old one off, but could carry the new one in one hand, Just plain weird if you ask me.

I had some stains around the bold holes on my Performer RPM. I simply cleaned it with simple green and painted it with with Duplicolor's Aluminum (color) paint. It looked as good as the day that I pulled it out of the box. :D

1978 L82 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 458520
1979 L82 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 458520 (Early Production)
1979 L82 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 14007378
1980 L82 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 14014432 (All L82,L48,LG4)
1981 L81 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 14033058
1982 L83 Aluminum Intake Manifold, Casting # 14031372

1973-1977 L82 had cast iron intakes, 1973-1979 L48 had cast iron intakes.

I would sand blast and not paint the original manifold. Depending on how you use the car, you might not see much performance gain. If you sandblast be sure to remove and clean under the heat shield.

mapman has it right. Sandblast it or use some stuff I got from the hardware store called Burnishine Aluminum Brightener. It's a thick fluid that you brush on with a paint brush and then rinse off with water. I used it in my manifold collection and it made them bright silver and took off ALL the crud. Be careful with it...it contains acid and flourides. Only problem with sandblasting is it removes identification marks on the manifold. Depends on what media they use though.
I also wouldn't bother installing an aftermarket manifold unless you are going to change more stuff like carb, headers and cam.

I have access to a vette restorers sandblaster. I hope it will Not remove any numbers, it shouldn't he restores to concourse level. I'm going to keep it stock. What I'm removing (egr, stove, riser) can be put back easy. Just makes it better for cruzin' :D If after blasting it looks great, I'll leave it. I thought alum. paint would look ever better...

Do a search for Burnishine Aluminum Brightener.
It actually turns the aluminum back to it's original bright grey color...not silver like I wrote. I got it at a True Value hardware store. It's sold online too.

BTW does anyone know an easy trick to clean out the EGR passages on used aluminum intakes? I got more than one I’d like to clean out.

I'm pulling off the EGR and putting on a block-off plate. Would it be better to go with stock intake manifold bolts (black) or Stainless Steel? I broke off the front 2 bolts, finally got them out. S/S bolts will not break off in the water jacket. But I'm also like the factory look...

As long as they are the same strength bolts, I'd suggest stainless with some Anti-Seize on the threads. They won't rust and the Anti-Seize will allow easy removal in the future. Can always paint the heads black ;)

Be very careful sandblasting factory manifolds! The metal shield underneath will collect sand and ruin your motor if you don't remove it. There's no way to get all the sand out otherwise. It only takes one grain left behind... Joe
