Just bought a '71 454 4spd AWESOME! The orginal motor, sadly is gone and in it's place is what appears to me to be a small block 350. I've checked the engine block casting number (3970010) and casting date (D 14 9 or maybe 0 or 8?). The books I have indicate this to be a chevrolet 350 block. What gets me is the front stamp pad number V 04 29 XT. What the heck is an XT motor? Anyone out there recognize this?? The closest I've come to decifering an XT suffix is a late model Ponitac 301 (this is highly doubtful). There is no VIN on the pad so I doubt it's a Corvette motor. It does have the "double-hump" heads with the old L-82 finned aluminum valve covers. Any ideas what motor this might have come from?
3970010 is the casting number on the small block that was original to my 71. Not sure what it came from, but could have been small block from another vette.
The 010 block is a high nickle block (IIRC) and can be 2 bolt or 4. As said above, they were used in everything. The motor that I just pulled from my car was a 2 bolt 010 block from a 73 Camaro.
Swifty, I would say that you have a 350 out of a 69 truck. As stated before, most of the X codes were trucks(c and K, 10 and 20) Also, after 69, Chevy started using 3 digit codes on the front pad. It may have started life as a truck engine, but it can be upgraded in the hosepower dept. just like any other small block. Enjoy it!! Hershey :chevy :chevy :chevy
Thanks ya'll for your responses. Looks like that ## came froma variety of sources. I'm going to pull a valvelcover and get a serial number of one of the heads because I'm curious about them too. May also indicate what the CID of the block is if it's matched properly. Engine only needs to last until a suitable 454 can be prepared and "squeezed" in! :D
