Default Frame off restore on a 1979.

Has anybody done a frame off restore on a 79 Vette ? What was your total cost, and whom did you use for each stage ? I am looking to do this soon, wife wants to farm the job out instead of having me do the work. My budget will be about $15,000.00 for the job. I work for VBP so I will get a killer deal on all my parts. Looking for total labor hours spent if possible. Who is the best paint man in Florida ? Any ideas would be great, thanks in advance for your help.

Tony for a full frame off your probably going to have to add about another 10K to that even w/your discounts. A good paint job is going to run you about 4-5K easy. Thats what we used to charge. We've done many frame offs here and people usually wind up spending 30-40K all together. It depends on whether or not you want new interior, motor rebuilt, etc. etc. It all depends on how far you want to go w/the car. We do rolling chassis here for 4K and a 5 year warranty.

I think my frame off was somewhere around 60K, and I made most of the work by myself.

Your car is Not a 'Money Car'. If your going to do a frame-off I would find a pre '73. At least it will be worth $$$ when done. I know you may love the '79 but you will never recoup the $$$ you spend. Just trying to help...

It's your car, have at it if that's what you want to do. Will you lose money in teh end, lots, and definately. Does the car mean something to you and will you have fun while going broke, absolutely. Will your accountant hate you and vendors love you. Absolutely.

I've got a lot more into my 78 then it is worth. But the car means more to me then just dollars and cents. If the car doesn't mean that much to you, sell it and buy a real decent chrome bumper shark and get the best you can afford with the money from the sale of the 79 and the 15k you were going to throw at it. Unless you want busted knuckles, dirt under the fingernails, long hours and lots of frustration).

Either way, enjoy!
