Default Pre-75 Dual Exhaust

On Pre-75 Dual Exhaust systems is there a brace or clamp between the dual exhaust pipes, holding them close together just below the differential? If so, please post pictures and provide information on where to get the part.

I've never seen or heard of one.

I installed a '74 true dual kit about a year ago that came with all the hardware. No bracket in the package.

Maybe some Bubba installed one because they thought it was a good idea.

No brackets.. The exhaust is clamped at the joint right behind the crossmember and then supported by the hanger at the rear of the muffler. That's it.

Whoever installed my dual exhaust welded a small rod between the exhaust pipes just below the pumpkin. That would be alright with me if it was two inches forward, but currently it is in the way of my being able to check the torque on the rear spring bolts. I wanted to cut the rod off with a dremel, but thought I better first check to see if the rod or a clamp was necessary. I have the other supports that you mention, so apparently it will not do any harm to remove the rod.

I just replaced my exhaust with chambered and what you see below is what also came off the vette when I pulled the stock exhaust system. I asked the same question before I dropped my exhaust if there was any support system that was missing around the axle area. The only reasons I can see that someone would have added the bar is that they were looking for extra support or maybe one side or the other wasn't rigid for some reason.

There was never anything from the factory between the pipes, but someone may have added something as a "patch" for other problems.

71-LS5,
Yes, that is the same area where the rod between the two exhausts is welded. I am going to cut it off. If I observe any problems, then I can reweld it a couple of inches forward so that it is out of the way from the spring plate bolts.

I'll bet they welded the piece to get the pipes to hang evenly. On most C3s you'll see one pipe slightly higher or lower than the other and they're a bear to adjust correctly. by welding a piece in between them you're guaranteed that they will hang evenly. I think the installer took the easy way out. cut off the extra piece or you won't be able to drop just one side of the exhaust. You'll have to drop both pipes at the same time. Oh yeah, and don't go back to that installer.

That makes sense. Now I understand why they welded the rod there.
