Default Door Latch Assemby - quick question

I have taken my drivers side door latch assembly out of my door. It is very dirty, and I think this was the main reason why the outer door handle didn't work very well.

Is it ok to clean the latch assembly with a parts washer?
What kind of lubricant should I use on the latch after I get it clean?

I'm hoping to get this little project finished tonight. I miss the convenience of being able to open my drivers side door from outside the car.

I used carb cleaner and a tooth brush to get mine cleaned out. The mechanism came out real nice and clean. Then I used the same as everyone else, white lithium. Works real nicely now.

I soaked mine in mineral spirits for a day and then used a toothbrush. Then I put it in the dishwasher with a little extra soap on the "super scrubber" setting with extra heat when the wife went out of town. Greased it up with lithium grease and it is as good as new. The dishwasher does wonders on parts-hubcaps, intakes......
