My father just handed down his 1979 Vette to me. It has been sitting in my grandparents barn since 1994. I freed up the front wheels but can't fre up the rear. I don't think that my caliper are seized I think that my tranny or diff. is seized. I can move the driver side tire about a half of an inch both ways but that is about it. I can see the drive shaft moving a bit but something is holding it in place. My shifter linkage is moving and it is in neutral.
I would really like to free them up so I can tow it to my house to start restoring it.
Could someone help me by providing me direction for removing the driveshafts and half shafts (Exploded view of a 1979 rear end.)
One last question: My aluminum wheel are impossible to get off. I have a dead blow sledge hammer that I have been beating my tire with but those puppies are not coming off!!
As for the wheels, I had to take the lug nuts off mine and spray WD40 in the holes twice a day for three days before it would come off by beating it with a mallot up , down, then side to side to work it loose.
If you have the car jacked up the wheels will be hanging down with a lot of angle to the half shafts. Try putting jackstands at the trailing arms to let the half shafts sit at a more normal angle. If you have grease fittings in the u-joints lube them.
Its probably your emergency brakes that are seized.
:withstupid:
Mine were stuck solid after sitting 17 years. I would bet you anything that's what's wrong with yours. I think diff. etc. are much less likely. It took alot of persuasion (getting the rotors off) But once they're off you can disassemble the em. brake assembly and replace with SS parts.
