.....was it to put the build sheet glued to the front of the gas tank? I found mine and when I tried to remove it, it crumbled from 23 years of being in the weather. Is a ROYAL pain to try and put back together. Was overjoyed when I found it and then touched it and it crumbled. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions..... :flag
Re: Who's brain dead idea........ (greatgonzoglenn)
It was never meant to be used, or seen, by anyone other than the assembly people. Just a working document/checklist..... We've made it out to be something it was never meant to be.
Re: Who's brain dead idea........ (greatgonzoglenn)
Don't let it bother you. There are sources on the net that will print you a nice new one all crisp and legible that looks EXACTLY like the original. Just about ANY documentation you want can be reproduced rather easily. Even the famous Protect-o-plate gizmo can be made.

you're lucky. my car hasn't been touched but the tank sticker is long gone.
thankfully GM Canada can provide a full build sheet and other data.

:iagree: I don't think the original intention was to produce a valuable (to some) historical document.
I keep hearing in these threads about how easy it is to get fake tank stickers and POPs and such, but I've never seen anything anywhere (including in car resto mags and places like the Corvette and Chevy Trader which have all kinds of businesses large and small advertising repro stuff). I'm starting to think it's a load. Just did a google search with a number of terms and found exactly zip. You can get repro window stickers, but that's about it so far as I can determine, unless there's some deeply buried blackmarket for these items. Sombody enlighten me--are there guys out there who sell this stuff out of their trunks? Do you have to meet 'em in a the parking lot at Shoney's to score? :D
Personally, I don't think there's enough of a demand to make manufacturing these things practical, and since they're basically custom productions, they'd have to be expensive as hell. And honest folks ain't gonna spend the scratch.

Was that what that yellow bits of paper were? It was the consistency of a dry thin wafer. I found mine, or about a quarter of the page of it, while removing the rear tire. But this gave details of the original shipping destination (dealership), and some other specifications, etc. Gave some good clues of my cars history - it was sold from a dealership in Panama City, Florida. I saved the crumbling yellow bits I could pull from on top of the gas tank in the hopes of taping it together some day. About 3/4 of the sheet, if it is still intact, is still up there wedged in between the gas tank and body.
JB: You need to improve your search engine. I found a place that will restamp engine blocks to match whatever code you want. These places are NOT going to advertise in legitimate publications. What they are doing is "borderline" legal (hmmm...maybe it IS done ACROSS the border???). I also don't see ads for real crack cocaine or pot in High Times either...but it IS available.
No demand? Check out the prices for numbers-matching cars vs cars with replaced engines. Then come back eating a crow sammich
As far as a fake sheet being done, that add must be in the back of the comic books with the X-ray specs adds.
Brent...
Yep...keep right on believing that :bs and never remove that blindfold and you'll be all set
Considering they had to change the way our money looks because your average kid with a flatbed scanner could easily duplicate it, I can't believe anyone would be silly enough to DOUBT that something as simple as that paperwork couldn't be accurately duplicated. You guys need to get your heads out from behind those exhaust pipes and get a reality check.
No way I'm gonna post WHERE this stuff is being done, but it IS out there in abundance. If there's a way to make a buck off something, people WILL do it.
C'mon, Depster, put up or shut up!:D (I mean that in a nice way  ) I know about restamped engines and such, and trust me, restamping services & such are advertised all over hell and high water, including my favorite Vette mag, Corvette and Chevy Trader, which I'll bet has a half dozen ads in there for restamping, including a guy who will rent you an original GM gang stamp for the do-it-yourselfer. If anything is illegal, that is (and it ain't). Repros of the paperwork that comes with your car aren't illegal in any way, shape, or form. Immoral & sleazy, maybe, but not illegal. Repro window stickers are also all over the place and easy to get, and how's that any better or worse than a repro POP or tank sticker?
I stand by my original claim until you give me a URL or a phone number and make me shut my trap and curse your ancestors!:D
Sorry JB, but I ain't a gonna do it. I'm not going to help some dillweed rip off someone with a fake "numbers matching" car or list of fradulent accessories and options that were bolted in by the owner of the car or some shady dealer.
I DO think that anyone who is paying big $$$$$ for a Vette based on the alleged "authentic" paperwork and POP has "sucker" written all over him.
I think it's to the point now where IT DOESN'T MATTER if your parts are "authentic" or repros. It's becoming impossible to tell any more anyway.
I have one of those "numbers matching" correct motors and it's going right in the junk pile. No 4-bolt mains and round port heads mean I have no use for it. I knew that when I bought it, though.
