U-Joint Question
I am wondering if it is possible to put a u-joint in backwards and what would some symptoms be if it were in backwards. Just curious. I have a vibration that I don't like.

If the u-joint has a zerk, then a "backwards" installation would just make it difficult to lubricate. Otherwise u-joints are symetrical (Spicer anyway) and there isn't a front/back.
If you have a vibration, a likely spot to look is the propeller shaft as the half shafts are not balanced. Did the balance weight fall off? Is the propeller shaft reversed (with the weight up by the transmission)? Are all the u-joints properly seated? Any retaining clips missing?
did you get the cap in all the way?? some times the clip will go in, but not seat on the grove. this allows the u-joint to walk back and forth and get the drive shaft out of balance.
More info please :D Did it start after you did something? Always there?
Start out slow, then it started to grow??(sorry,a little Dr Suess there).
Can't do it backerds, else I would've. Check tranny mount too. :yesnod:
propeller shaft? does he mean DRIVEshaft? That's what we call it where I come from

Sorry for any confusion. In the Corvette Parts Manual the "driveshaft" is listed as: SHAFT. Propeller ........... section 5.544. The parts manual does not have a listing for a "driveshaft". :)

Re: U-Joint Question (mapman)
As for the vibration, it came after the tranny install. I am not sure if it is the tranny or the carb. I did have a stumble that was at lower RPM when just taking off. The Muncie allowed me to cruise above this stumble. The Keisler has me cruising at around 2000 just barely touching the gas pedal. I was also wondering if maybe I hurt one of the motor mounts when I was installing the tranny. If I get on the gas hard the vibes are gone.

sounds like your spark plugs may be taking a crap, i have had problems in the past with the insulators cracking and the plugs side arcing. this causes a low-end stumble and drive train vibration. when the motor hits higher rpm and slightly leaner mixture, the resistence is less with less fuel and the plug fires normaly and the miss/vibration goes away. it took a couple weks and a Sun tuning machine to figure that one out. u-joint problems are generally exaggerated under load, that is why i would look to tuning. some run of the mill Autolite 26's are cheap and they will work great in your car. good luck, Brian
