I have a lead on a set of 79-82 seats for my 69. I was told they are white in pretty good shape. I am going to check them out tomorrow. My problem is my interior is black. Depending on how good they are I plan on getting new leather for the seats and painting the plastic buckets or dying the leather black. Has anyone change the interior color? Any tricks to help out. thanks
Thanks for the reply's. The seats were in great shape. No rips, just a little wear. Ed t what did you use to clean the seats? also what paint did you use on the buckets? Also is there a way to tell if the seats are leather, vinyl or leather/vinyl? I am going to dye them black. any input from your experiance doing your seats would be a great help. Your seats look great. Thanks.
I dyed a set of vinly seats last year , followed corvette america's instrutions to the letter , used their dye about 3 cans @ $16 ea , looked great , the only problem the seats would stick to each other , I just recovered them with a set of new covers from wilcox. I learned my lesson, as usual , the hard way :smash:
I have a set of 79 doeskin all leather seats about six years old, In great shape but the color is slightly faded. What would the cushions be worth if i sold them out right . I think new all lather would run $800. Just wondering if its worth the time ...
If you are going to clean or dye your leather then use the letherique. It may be a bit pricey but you definately get what you pay for.
I've seen the owner George turn cardboard hard leather to better than new with the rejuvenator. They are really good peaople at leatherique, and very helpful. If you want it to last as long time don't treat it like vinyl.
If they are Vinyl, you can try this stuff called Molecubond. It is a true dye penetrant and I found it at Walmart. It wont peel or flake off and worked beautiful.
I had brand new Tan vinyl seat covers installed on my seats when I bought the car. I redid the interior from Tan to Black. I used SEM and Plastikote vinyl paints for all other plastic/vinyl peices, but for the seats, I went with this stuff for better longevity.
I cleaned them up with Simple Green and then used Xylene/Xylol solvent for a final clean before I dyed (no primer used). Dont do this on a real humid day though as this can affect the final finish.
The seats have gone though a year and a half and still look like the day tehy were dyed.
The Molecubond dye was in the automotive section, with all the spray paints. The can is almost as tall as a regular spray can but is thinner (Less OD). Was also more expensive ($9) also than the other vinyl paints ($5).
By the way, the Plastikote vinyl paint has worked just as good as the SEM vinyl paint in finish quality and durability. I think the black hue is slightly different but thats about it.
