Re: OK, so how crazy am I? (corvetteworks)
Looks like a hardtop convertible. Does the HT come with the car? This should help keep some of the cold air out. Looks like a nice car. Should be quite an adventure. Have fun the next few days.
Just kidding! It does come with a soft top. The weatherstrip is apparently in rough shape though.
I wish i would have posted this a few days ago. I would like to of a had a network of people along the way where i could go if i needed help. I can't bring my tools and spare parts on the plane. I wish i could. I am actually starting to get pretty nervous about this adventure.
I don't get a hard top or soft top. I am going to be driving home with a ski hat, goggles, and a warm military rain coat.
I agree you are truly nuts!! I think you need to seriously reconsider this trip or rent a Ryder truck and load the sucker in the back! It'll fit in one of the larger trucks!

Now you are crazy. good Luck, Craig
Does the heat work. Oh man, I am not jealous anymore. The rear deck is setup as hardtop convertible. I wouldn't be able to make this trip without freezing out.
Good luck on your trip..Been there, done that and got the T shirt..Mine went well, ok pretty well, just a fried alternator on my trip..
That is one beautiful vert..
Have fun and Merry Christmas

70 percent! ooch. So here is a fun question. How many tanks of fuel is this 350 going to suck up between virginia and detroit? I was estimating a 100.00 fuel bill?? :U :grouphug:
hey smokhouse, each day i am gone on this trip is one more day of vacation from my wife. I hope the wheels fall off and the engine throws a rod. :reddevil
I used to do it all the time in the '80's. I would fly down with a buddy, carry on duffle bag, license plate, a couple of tools, a credit card just in case. Here is what I brought home:
'68 Ford Torino GT / South Carolina in 1984
'68 GTO Convertible / Chattanooga, TN in 1984
'75 Grand Prix / TN (can't remember what city) in 1986
'78 Grand Prix / Charlotte NC in 1988
'76 Ford F100 / Charlotte NC (same trip as grand prix) 1988
'66 Ford Mustang / Charlotte NC (still have it) in 1992
Me and my buddy drove everyone home back to Michigan. We did travel in the summer though. Only had trouble with the GTO in Dayton (blowout tire, no spare), 10 quarts of oil.
I am driving down to Florida with my family the day after Christmas, bringing a few bucks just in case! My daughter starts driving in Feb, so I would like to get an old persons car with no rust for her.
Dwayne, I'll bet if you add up the fuel bill for all those trips it would be more than i made the last 5 years
They all sucked gas like a pig, but the Mustang. I drove it home without the power steering working, but the engine (six cyl) ran perfect, and I think it got around 18 mpg. It did not use any oil. It had 60 some thousand on the engine. I still have not touched the bottom end, around 70 thousand now.
WOW...an adventurous guy like myself. When I bought my 72 last year, I drove it 900 miles from Long Island NY to Chicago with only a 2 hour nap (in the car) Worst part was NO RADIO :cry I knew every squeek and rattle when I got home.
Good Luck Scott. You should get plenty of  and :seeya from motorists along the way. I also garantee you'll know that cars capabilities/flaws inside and out by the time you get home.
Have a safe trip...and get some pics up when you return.
Eddie :D
P.S. When I flew out, I took a travel tool kit with but checked it with luggage.
Is it a hilly drive through the mountain areas. What can i expect?
I don't know what time you are flying out but no the route isn't really that hilly. I wouldn't go all the way to D.C. though. I would take 17N to I-81 which is exit 133 (I think) off of 95 just north of Richmond. This way you bypass all of that D.C. traffic and cut about 1 1/2 to 2 hours off of your trip. This is the way that I always go to Ohio now instead of going up to D.C.
Adventurious....yes. I think it's great, and I would be just as crazy to do the same thing.
When I bought my current 69 vert in 1999, I drove it to "Woodstock 99", after having it for only three days. So I didn't know the car very well. We drove from Ann Arbor to NY, and back again on surface roads only. We had no problems along the way, and I ended up with a permanant smile on my face, which I still have to this day.
Here's hoping your trip goes as well as mine did. And if it doesn't I hope you have plenty of phone #'s. :hurray:
