I just bought a 74 convertible down in Virginia beach. I am flying down there in the morning to pick it up. Here is the stupid part. I am going to attempt to drive this car all the way back to detroit. I only know what the owner has told me, which is yes, it runs great! Typically you should attempt these types of adventures in the warm season where there is no chance of being snowed in by a bad mountain storm!!! I sure hope this thing runs good. I hope i don't break down. That would be one incredibly large towing bill!! :cry :steering:
I think it's great. Not a very smart choice but it shows you have some gonads. Take plenty of tools and a reliable credit card. Good luck!! :chevy
By the way, if you break down and can't fix it, you can always rent a Ryder rental truck and flat trailer and turn it in in your town for much cheaper than getting it towed.
Not sure what route you are taking but when I go up to Ohio I go up I-95 to 17N to I-81N then take the PA turnpike across. That should be the only trouble spots for you as far as any weather goes. We are going to have great weather here in Virginia Beach tomorrow and Tuesday so you should have nice weather to start out with. :D

Thats pretty much what I did 1.5 years ago. Bought the Vette in Brooksville, FL and drove it back to Knoxville. The only difference was I drove a rental car down and drove the Vette back. The rental car took 2 tanks of gas to get down and the Vette drank 4 tanks on the way back. It a was an adventure, I didn't hit rain until about 20 miles from home.
Alright... I don't want to get into peoples business but why dont a few of you guys along the way offer up a # for him to call incase in need of emergency help. Maybe that would atleast be enough for some confidence. I mean at the very least we could give you a ride out of the cold and a good place to figure out what to do. Let me know if your going the NJ way... maybe thats why its easy for me to say this since I am pretty sure your not.
Any stops scheduled? I would probably break it into 2 hour intervals for the car (30 min. breaks) so you'd have to stop like ~6 times or until you get real comfortable with it. This would probably make the whole thing an overnight affair as well for me.
I don't think your crazy... just stoopid... haha... :jester
Thats what I thought of myself after I had troubles with my vette after I just bought it.
Hey thay phone number thing is a good idea! I am going to be going north from virginia beach up through washington d.c. towards pittsburg. I think i end up on the I80 through youngstown, through northern OH and up to Detroit.
Sure!! Here is a number to call if you need help! 1-800-AAA-HELP
And remember, when you dial "AAA" it is NOT "1 1 1", it is the number "2" on your keypad! I learned that the hard way. :( Seriously, an ace corvette mechanic/restorer such as yourself should be able to size up the situation immediately, and if you deem the vette road-worthy I am sure you will be able to handle anything that comes up. Post your intended route (*****edit... sorry, just saw your route above***) and check in with us if you are able. :) MJ
I am using the route i got off of mapquest.com. If someone knows a faster way then what they show i am all ears. I am also open to monday/tuesday visits to forum members houses for free beer breaks!!! It will probably be nice to take a few breaks along the way. It is going to be a long drive. It would be nice to see some of the cars i have been providing parts for :yesnod:

Try a map-quest from Pitt to Detroit....see if it's any different. I80 is about 1hr N of Pittsburgh and really no easy way to get there except going North on I79.
Be carful on the Pa turnpike from Sommerset thru Irwin...always lots of accidents there.
I'll be in and out all day both Monday and Tuesday but you have my number(s). Sounds like you'll be on the road mostly on Tuesday though. They're forcasting rain Monday-Wed with 40-50 deg temps. Make sure the wipers & defroster work.
