I recently started a new job so progress on the vette is slow... but here are some recent pictures.
Yes I knew the birdcage had been previously fixed.... but we were young and uninformed when we bought it.... it lasted 13 years
I have a spare birdcage and windshield frame that will be going in it soon. Surprisingly the rocker channels are for the most part ok. I believe most of the rot was caused by a crack in the lower portion of the windshield frame and caused water to get into it.
Merry christmas.... hopefully Santa listened to me and is bringing lots of parts for me(HA HA yeah right!)
Wow that sucks. My windshield leaks at the top got to pull it out to fix it maybe rusted not sure but I guess I am going to find out. good luck with your project.
Let me know if you need a windhsield frame as the one in the car was replaced before I bought it as is in excellent condition. It will be cut out with the door pillars as I have a complete door pillar, windshield frame assembly that I'd much rather put in my car complete( 2 less welding seams)
How did the windshield removal go? I understand that the center lower area has a wide section where quite a bit of adhesive is used during windshield installation. When it comes time to remove the window, it may break at this location.
Makes me glad I live in California! (other things do not!) I just sold a 72 roadster basket case and gave the guy a 71 coupe birdcage with the car that had been a "racecar" project sitting for the last 10 years outdoors that is positively "concourse" compared to your photos! Good luck in your project, Eric.
BTW - I cut my channel glass at the same place u did. Ended up being a real pain trying to glue it back to close to the pillar and that area also endedup being a stess point. If I had to do it over I would have broken the welds by the fender.
Good luck with the fix. I had to completely redo my birdcage - i.e. cut ALL the glass off. It wasn't so bad. You can tackle this no problem. AND it gave me and excuse to buy a MIG welder!
damn that sucks but one question, I can't understand why people buy such cars, the damage in the door hinge area and the area around the #2 body mount can easily be checked (just pull out the kick panel and start digging for rust there), I have looked at a lof of cars and the one I own now was the only one that had no rust (only to find out later that on the pass. side the #1 mount was smashed up)
Good luck repairing that, you will have your work cut out for you there.
