I have done a number of gear changes over the years including 3 or 4 on my 75 and I have never needed to spread the housing. I get a snug fit on the shims and then add .005 per side for preloading. I install the thin shims first then tap the biggest one with a rubber mallet.

The alloy housings used on the 82 models will grow when the gear oil temp rises , it is good practice to spread them when rebuilding . The cast iron units can be done as norval explained in his post with little or no problems.

terry82 I have never done a aluminum case, only cast iron but mustang vette they are all the same. The only thing I have started doing is not using the crush sleeve and going to a solid spacer.

I had to spread the aluminum housing to remove and install the carrier. The Dana 44 does not use a crush sleeve.

It was nice to know that forum members like Norval were ready to provide tech assistance when I did my gear swap.

ram82fire's reasoning for spreading was the first I've heard on this but it makes perfect sense.
