My '74 still has the original optional Delco AM/FM Stereo in it and it still works great. Back in the '70s, two Jensen speakers were installed in a false wall in the back of the cargo area. The front speakers were suppost to work with the rear ones but never worked after the rear ones were istalled. Last year, the flase wall came out, cargo lamp was reconnected, and the speakers were replaced. I replaced them with Jensen 120 watt box speakers. When my aunt installed the speakers, she just used the existing wire from when the rear speakers were installed, which is like 28 years old. Now, when you adjust the radio volume, there is static. I'm afraid this is being caused by the acient speaker wire. Is it? I'm plannaing to replace the wire anyway. What wire should I use? What do you guys use? Another thing is that the new speakers have too much bass. Is there a way I can fix that or will I need ann equalizer to do that? I also want to see if I can get the front speakers working again. Can I run 4 speakers off that stereo? If so, how do I go about doing that? Also, does anyone know the specs of a '74 Delco AM/FM Stereo, like watts, etc.?
Delco radios of the era require 8-10 ohm speakers. Since most speakers today are of the 4 ohm variety you need to use TWO speakers wired in series per side or channel. If you do not do this the radio may overheat and/or destroy the unit. The way it works is simple. two 4 ohm speaker in series equals 8 ohms resistance. Two 4 0hm speakers in parallel equals 0nly TWO ohms resistance. Go fron the radio positive to one speaker's +. now go from that speakers negitive (-) to the next speaker's +. Now go from that speakers - back to the radio's Ground(-). That is one side or channel depending on wheather your radio is stereo or mono. Repeat the process for the remaining side. I did a search on the web on series/parallel speaker wiring.
bluevetteman, thanks for the help.
Can anyone tell me what kind of speaker wire to use? Can I use something I can get at like radio shack or do I need a special type of wire? I really want to change out the 28 year old wire.
