i have noticed that my lights tend to dim at idle. I really dont know what the correct terminology is but it dims then brightens up. its a cycle. someone told me my alternator is going bad. anyone experience this problem?
[QUOTE]-what is your idle RPM speed?
-possibly your alternators drivebelt is old and slipping.
-Do you have aftermarket stereo equipment etc... hooked up?[QUOTE]
Never really noticed but is definatly under 1000
drive belt looks good
No. car is stock
Our alternators are a dime a dozen. Go ahead and get a rebuild kit or just pick up a new one from an Autozone type store and you cant go wrong. The replacement alternator pully might not be a deep V pulley (like vette OEM is), but I havent had problems with the belt jumping off.
I thought I had a bad alternator, but it turned out to be the field winding exciter voltage feed that goes through the dash to the idiot light and then back to the alternator. The connection in the dash was open somewhere between the light and the return line back to the alternator. I had to replace the entire wire line going through the firewall, but now the alternator works properly again.
Sounds like it could be the in built regulator in the alternator.Easy to remove, just take it to an auto electrician & have it checked out.If thats alright,it could be an earthing problem.
