Default Hurst Shifter Handle Replacement

....Just an FYI for those who have a Hurst shifter but don't like the handle.....

.......I'm not talking about the linkage here, but I've found the looks of the Hurst handle and even its performance is less than adequate.....when I bought my Vette, I found it was too long a throw to third, and after 8 months, I found myself shifting from the middle of the handle instead of on top to compensate......the replacement stock handle definitely looks and feels/works better.......

.....The replacement handle for the Hurst shifter is available from supporting vendors.......

The repair can be done without removing the console, but you do have to remove the trim plate and upper boot.......it is simply two bolts that hold it in place....so all you need is two combination wrenches and a good amount of patience, 'cause it's slow with the console in......

I removed the Hurst shifter with the console in, but I bolted the new handle on with the console removed......while I was at it, I also replaced the lower shifter boot......the rubber had perished and I wondered if this was excessive to replace a part that wouldn't be seen....but the new boot actually reduced engine smells and heat........

Here's some before and after pics:

BTW, the reverse lockout on this handle is non functional, although it does have the spring mechanism and moves if you pull it up.....kinda cool :)

Hope this helps

I did a similar thing with the Tremec shifter except I used an original shifter I got at Carlisle for the job. Makes it look ridgey didge but I have 5 speeds and the shifter comes out of the wrong side of the console.
P.S. I still can't afford to fly you and the missus over much less the accomodation at Crown Towers.
:D :D :D

I like this, it looks very good.

I saw these listed on E-bay for several weeks and then they quit listing them for auction. Where is the best deal on one of these available at? I need to go ahead and get one to be ready for my installation. Thanks, Jim

Wow, didn't know this. Thought it's rigit, one piece construction.
This is on my due list as well to get the car more original looking.
Only problem is, my 68 needs a chrome ball, not a black ball.
They offer up to 67 with chrome ball and from 68 upwards with black ball.
The 67 shifter doesn't fit. :mad

Pls let me know the ECKLERS order number.
Gunther

I agree the "replacement" handle looks much better with the Hurst Shifter. Here is mine:

EDIT: Although the reverse lock-out is non functional getting the Hurst Shifter into reverse is a trick. Really tight on my car. I have always assumed Hurst intended it to be that way.

Gunther

The part number for the handle I bought is Part# 26836, and is supposed to be for '68-'76.......

Ecklers also have a chrome **** Part# A2131 for 64-68 Vettes.....this may fit the handle.....you could ask Ecklers if it will fit or take the risk.....it's $16 for the chrome ****.........

I suppose it could be something in the linkage.....but you might want to check if the handle is binding against the boot and trim plate....a slight adjust in the shifter console might be required......just a thought.....
