I am going to redo my frame and am planning on gaving it galvanised and them powder painted.
but when I do this I will have to re tap the threads on my frame, my qquestion now is since I live in Belgium and everything here is Metric I will have to order a inch set in the US.
I was looking at sears for a set but I don't know if these will be good for what I want to do .
Can somebody help me out here.
I was in sears over the holidays and looked at this set. Very nice set up that should fit your needs. I also remember seeing a set in one of the corvette vendor catalogs for this. I will look and see if I can find it.
Whatever set you buy just make damn GOOD AND SURE it's make in the USA, some of those sets from various vendors are Chinese made, and so are junk....even the dimensionality is off...in other words I have a 1/2 inch tap that is oversized and so will not fit snug on a 1/2 inch bolt...marked right, just China junk....so make sure....
:iagree: I know you live where there is mostly Metric stuff. If you find a good distributor of cutting tools they usually have a good line of taps and dies. They should be able to hook you up with whatever sizes you need. I work in the metal cutting industry and these should be readily available. As said there is only a couple of sizes that are needed. I have a full set but only use about 6 or 8 of the taps and dies in the set.
I have the Sears set. Certainly cheaper than buying them individualy and it comes with both pitch sizes. I have used them continuously thoughout my restoration.
I'm a machinist ( 23 years experience) and here's my thoughts...
I just checked out the set in your link. This will work out fine for cleaning/restoring the threads.
What it will NOT do is cut new threads. If you have repair work to do later that requires you to cut new threads you will have to purchase cut taps or dies.
Note. The M8 X 1.25 is very, very close to 5/16-18NC but do NOT interchange.
Thanks i think I will only be needing them to re thread.
Because when i will galvanise the body and then have it powder painted the threads will be destroyed so i will have to re thread them or will I need the cut taps to do this ??
And the only Taps that found in corvette catalogs are the one's you need for the suspension.
Do you have Snap-On over there? If not, for those of you in the USA, they make a fine tap and die set, it costs a little more, but it's nice. The real good thing about the Snap-On set is that if you break a piece it's replaced under warranty no questions asked. Or if you tear the teeth up on a die, same thing, warranty. Kind of nice on something like a tap and die that there is a pretty good chance of breaking something.
Yes we can get snap on here but it is verry expensive here.
And I don't think I will be using them that much to justify the price.
I will only use them for the frame and maybe some other parts of the car I will galvanise.
That's not a normal set of taps. They are thread chasers. How much is it going to cost you? How many of the taps do you really need? How many dies are you going to use?
In a vet I seem to only use the 3/8th and 7/16 taps.
If you gave me a list of the taps , the ones that you actually use I will send them to you free, you reimburse me shipping but the taps I will supply free. I have alot of them around the shop and can easily put the few you need together and send them. It will save you alot.
Guys to help stingraymax out lets start a list of the taps he needs, I don't have a clue what is needed. I have every size available and when doing a job just grab the tap.
I know I use 7/16 fine on the suspension, Help with the body.

That would be a great help If I know which ones i'll need I can get them seperatly and save alot
I am not familiar with US sizes so I have no clue on what size to get.
I find this one all over the chassis. I can tell which taps I use as they are all rusty on the shaft from sweaty fingers  I should wipe them with oil every now and then.
BTW - I almost NEVER use the dies. Something to consider when saving cost.

I have a Craftsman set that I use to cut threads as well as chase. It came in a different package and the shafts are different. How can I tell is I should be cutting threads with them or not?
