Where do the reverse, park, and neutral switches mount on automatic cars? Are they on the transmission or on the shifter? Will the stock one work on a 700R4 conversion?
Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (Yellow73BB)
The neutral safety switch is mounted on the shifter. Yes, the original from a TH 350 or TH 400 will work on a converted 700R4. You will have to change the shifter detent plate to accomodate the extra forward gear, but the PRN positions do not change.

Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (Rolling Thunder)
I too am using the stock shifter. I have had it adjusted 2 different ways now, and am still trying to decide which was best.
First way: I did not put a detent for the 4th (D) gear. When I pulled back from neutral, it would not stop until it went to 3rd gear, where it had a detent for the shifter. I could feel the detent in the trans. for 4th, but could keep pulling back through it and it would stop at 3rd. I like this as you shouldn't be in 4th until highway speeds anyway. Then I would just push it forward on small nudge and it would drop into 4th.
Second way: I adjusted the cable so that pulling back out of neutral dropped it into 4th and it stopped there. I do have problems pulling all the way back and finding and holding 1st gear though.
I most likely will go back to the first method.

BowTieOverdrives has shifter conversions for these. You take a stock shifter and drill the spotwelds holding the detent plate on and screw a new detent plate back on. This is what I did. Incidentally the 82 Vettes use his first method, stock shifter with no way to select 1st gear. You could also take a dremmel and notch the detent plate enough to allow 1st gear selection.
Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (markdtn)
I changed mine to the one from BTO. The stroke is the same from Park to 1st but the difference is from park to neutral. There is also a difference in the lock locations for all the gears. If you don't change it then it will be possible to be in 2 gears at the same time.
As for the safety switch, because the gears are in different positions for reverse and neutral the switch doesn't line up correctly. With my 73 I was able to take the switch apart and make some modifications to it to get it to work. I had to elongate the mounting slots. Then I set it up so the backup lights would come on when it was in reverse. At that point it would start in neutral also but not in park. Inside the switch is 3 rollers that will make contact with the wire blades when they’re in the correct place. I removed a little bit of the plastic so it could make contact in the "new" Park position.
Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (redwingvette)
I have the bowtie overdrives conversion, and will be putting it in. It looks like I either need to buy a switch (I don't have one) or make one out of a magnet and some reed switches.
Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (Yellow73BB)
my switch dies and I could not get the car to fire. I had the switch removed, and shortly after the tranny woes began. I don't know if they are related or not
Re: reverse/neutral/park switch for 700R4 conversion (Yellow73BB)
Yel73BB, that what I did using Radio Shak reed switches and magnet...but had to use a relay to carry the higher current of the backup lights....
frankly I need to make a shifter interface so that I can't go into reverse at speed.....I used to have a Muncie, and just hooked up one of the shift levers to the automatic, and modded the shifter accordingly....
