I am currently looking at a 1971 Coupe and was wondering if someone could tell me where on the block, the numbers are stamped that I can match to the car's VIN number. Also, what other numbers should I check?
Check the front of the block on the passengers side , there should be two sets of numbers on a pad they sholud read something like V0602CGZ & a second set of numbers that end with a partial part of the vin#, this partial vin# should match the vin# on the drivers side windshield frame tag. Also depending on what matching #'s you are looking for , the transmission has the vin# stamped on it , the carb should be the correct one with correct dates, it all depends on how much of the car you want to be matching #s. Also the dates and casting #'s should match with your build date taht is on the trim tag on the drivers side door jam should have the interior code, interior code and the build date, something like 400/989/K16. Post the numbers and we can help. Check the back of the block for the casting #'s and the build date for the block. check this site it will help you.http://www.mortec.com/location.htm
Also when checking the stamp on the block , make sure all the numbers in the stamp line up correctly and there sholud be fine lines running front to back not swirling in a circle which could be a restamp. If you have a digital camera post pictures.
As 71vert has said almost everything has a number and date code on it so the term matching numbers has a different meaning to different people. Most people look to the engine pad as the meaning of matching numbers. It's a good starting point as these two sets of numbers will verify the originality of the engine to the car (Vin derivative) as well as the type (350 L48, 350 LT1, 454 Big Block). Two good books you might to get are the NCRS 1970-72 Corvette Technical Info Manual & Judging Guide and Corvette by The Numbers by Alan Colvin. Both can be purchased on their site http://www.NCRS.org
Here's a pic of my cars engine. Look just above the AC comp and to the left of the heater hose just in front of the valve cover. You will notice a small unpainted area. That's the engine stamp pad. If unsure check yours out and post the numbers you find.
Good luck. :chevy
Here's an example of the #'s you can look for. The following are off of my '71 454 with Muncie M-20 4 Speed. Again... just an example.
VIN: 194371S114493 (Driver's side window support)
Engine Block Castings: GM8T 3968512 C4 71 (rear of block in front of tranny)
Engine #'s: T0330CPH C115114493 (front passenger side of engine on pad)
Cylinder Heads:
Driver side: C25-71 GM10T 3993820 (under valve cover)
Passenger side: A28-71 GM9T 3993820 (under valve cover)
Transmission Casting: 3925661 (passenger side of tranny)
Transmission #'s: C115114493 P1D06A (passenger side of tranny)
As you can see the block & tranny have the same set of numbers that are also included in the VIN. All of the numbers above will give you alot of information as to the build of the drive train(engine/tranny) if you start matching them up to what GM offered in '71. Any of the members here will gladly decode the numbers on the '71 you are looking at if you post them on the forum.
I just clicked on the above link and it took me to a site with oriental writing.I don't know if its a safe site or not so I figured I would say something.

Hey guys, I have read all your posts on the numbers ID stuff and have received many pictures from a friend of mine who now owns a dealership, will not say where as it will become blatantly clear as read on.. What I have so far is a pic of the old title, the new title, a pic of the VIN Plate, multiple pics of the engine, etc... All the numbers seem to add up, however I am NOT a corvette guy as yet, But I do so and have forever desired either a '63 Split Window Big Block car or my dream car a 68-9 427/435HP 4SPD car in Blue! Oh my LORD! It would so match my 69 LeMans 2 owner PHS documented 2 time GTOAA Nationals winning car!! Also has won either 1st or 2nd place like 12-15 times at the NW Regional GTOAA Meet in Bend, OR Among many other awards and races... But I digress... So the VIN I have is of course only 13 digits, so every time I try to use a free app on my phone it won't work cuz they keep saying I need 17 digits!
Hope you can HELP!! I have a down payment as I trust my friend, But.. I would love to verify what the car is..Or isn't....
VIN: 194678S403201 1968 Corvette Coupe 427 Blue 4 Speed Trim 402 Paint 976 or C28. 976 is stamped before the word PAINT & C28 is stamped above the PAINT...
He sent another pic of some numbers on a machined surface, with some 'fine lines' running them, but I can't tell what part of the block its on... they are: T10201R
Any and all help in ID'n this car correctly is much, much appreciated!
Brent

While this is true here. It worth mentioning that a lot of forums the opposite is encouraged and people get slack for starting new threads everyday with the same questions instead of using the search function.
If you are serious about purchasing this car, consider hiring a professional inspector. That person will be able to inspect and answer any question you may have and also give a reliable opinion on the rest of the car as well. By the way, no 63 or 64 came from the factory with a big block engine. You could not install one in a 63/64 without modifying the frame cross member. Jerry

I agree, I always use the search feature before starting a new thread. I figure others have had the same issue at some point. My only problem is when the person doesn't come back and post their resolution.
With this being a 2003 thread, I thought a new thread would benefit him if he's considering purchasing the car.

Please do not post to a thread started 17 years ago and ask your own seperate, unrelated question.
We do encourage the use of the Search function, which works extremely well when used right.
We do not encourage tacking on a separate, personal questions to an unrelated thread, especial when the thread is extremely old. This should always be a new thread.
