My hood insulation recently was covered with a good deal of powersteering fluid and im wondering what the concquences of removing it totaly and not replacing would be. I have a 76 L48 and it keeps a temp of 150 at all times. I know its there to protect the paint from heat so will it hurt to remove it, is it any diffrent than other cars because its fiberglass. This would alos prevent it from rubbign on my air cleaner and getting it all dirty/greasy every time i close the hood.
Re: removing hood insulation, Bad effects? (79Fever)
i bought a new one and didnt like it either so i ended up taking it off a year ago...
a hot florida summer and no ill effects yet...
i even added some vinyl graffix to the underside, which is very heat sensitive...no prob...
its ok to do...i say go for it!

Most of the early C3 vettes had no hood insulation and still live to ride. I drove mine all summer here in Tennessee with no ill effects to the paint finish. Too bad, if had turned white I could have lived with it.

i have wondered about this, my uncle's painter told him to not let the sun reflect off of the engine chrome onto the underside of the hood for to long,
because of high heat in small area could hurt paint :skep: i didn't spend$$$$$$$$$ on it, so if he show's car,he lowers the hood when sun isn't
right, anybody do this?

At shows I cover my chrome K&N air filter with a towel if the angle of the sun is causing a reflection onto the underside of the hood. Don't know how long it takes to damage anything, but better safe than sorry.

I've seen hood paint scorched from the sun reflecting off chrome air cleaners. Most guys put a towel over the air cleaner or keep the hood lowered.
