Hi guys! JRios here from Rockport, TX with a serious problem on 1978 Corvette. I just replaced the rack and pinion unit and it seems that the thing wants to jerk the steering wheel out of my hands. It will jerk to one side violently. Is this because I switched the power steering pressure and return hoses or is the control box (damper valve?) ruined.
Thanks in advance guys!
JRios
This should walk you through the in-car balancing procedure.
Also, your power steering hoses as they attach to the control valve should form an "X" as they criss-cross into the valve. The following scan will show you how they should look: http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=184
View A shows the hoses as they attach to the control valve.
BTW the websight where they papers and scans are posted is: http://www.corvettefaq.com My papers are in the Steering section. There are many, many more papers and scans at this sight that can be of great value when working on your Vette.
Thanks for the help guys! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I don't get on the WWW much.
I'll check out the links and let you know how it goes with the fix!
