Default New guy here with steering problem

Hi guys! JRios here from Rockport, TX with a serious problem on 1978 Corvette. I just replaced the rack and pinion unit and it seems that the thing wants to jerk the steering wheel out of my hands. It will jerk to one side violently. Is this because I switched the power steering pressure and return hoses or is the control box (damper valve?) ruined.
Thanks in advance guys!
JRios

Sounds like your power steering control valve is not balanced.

First of all, I don't think that you have a rack and pinion in your 1978 Vette unless you or someone else installed a special unit from Steeroids.

It sounds more like you installed a new control valve. A number of "new" control valves have been reported that are not balanced as received. You will need to remove the sheet metal end cap on the valve and carefully adjust the nut inside the valve. Please download the following paper and the two scans:
http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=218 http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=219 http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=220

This should walk you through the in-car balancing procedure.

Also, your power steering hoses as they attach to the control valve should form an "X" as they criss-cross into the valve. The following scan will show you how they should look:
http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=184

View A shows the hoses as they attach to the control valve.

BTW the websight where they papers and scans are posted is:
http://www.corvettefaq.com My papers are in the Steering section. There are many, many more papers and scans at this sight that can be of great value when working on your Vette.

Good luck and Happy New Year,
Jim
