In past posts, I asked about a knocking sound from down in the engine. It did turn out to be bad bearings. Now, after polishing the crank, installing new lifters, and making sure the valves are set right, there is a 'clattering' noise that starts about 1500 rpm. Using a stethascope(sp) we have been able to isolate the sound to the number 1 cyl. area. If you probe all over the engine, you do not pick up the noise except right at number 1. If you put the scope on #2 no clatter. Very slight sound around #3, probably just bleed over from #1.
Does anyone have any ideas? Tried all I know how to do. It does not do this at idle, and the car runs very well. Has anyone ever had a valve guide come lose and if so, what did it sound like?
?? wrist pin, try pulling plug wire(ground it) and see if noise goes away, did
you just do bottom end?
Basically, what happened is that cyl 1 broke both rocker arms (not at the same time) and then a rod started to knock. Dropped the pan and check the bearings. Found that # 1 & 2 were both bad. Polished the crank (no damage found) with emery cloth and replaced the bearings. Got the engine started, and everything sounded OK at idle. When you rev it up, around 1500 rpm the noise starts and continues thru the upper RPM range.
Using the stethascope to try to isolate the noise, I put it all over the front of the engine. On the right side, you can't hear the sound at all. If you put it on the water pump, you do barely hear it, and if you put it on the valve cover it is very distinct, but only over #1. I would think a wrist pin would make noise all the time.
Completely lost. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
your probably right, i nomally will listen on the side of the block for the pins
could it still be from to much clearence in the lifter plungers, is # one getting
good oil?
When setting the valves, the oil seems to be pumping OK. Valves set by backoff till clatter, then 1/4 turn down. Doesn't really sound like valve noise. Can check it again. Ever had a problem with the nuts on the valves backing off? Only thing I can think at this point if it is a valve setting problem is possible thread problem on the stud.
This all started when the oil was changed over from 10-30 to partial synthetic. No problems till then.
