Default vent doors

First time using this forum so learning how to use it correctly. When I set the heater control to vent, I get hot air. This is an air conditioned vehicle. I have also noticed that the vents on the lower panel on both sides of the car, just in front of the doors, aren't opening. Is this the reason for the hot air or do I need to look in another direction. If it isn't the problem, I would still like the doors to open. Can you help me diagnose the problem?

Are you sure your car has A/C??? I thought the A/C cars only had the right vent door. I don't believe there is "left door". Anyways, the right door should close(if your system is working correctly) to keep hot air from coming into your car while the A/C is trying to cool the car.

I believe the right door should be open when the A/C is on Max to recirculate the interior air. You might want to get an assembly manual and a mity vac pump to check the operation of all the flaps and doors. Craig

If your are getting hot air inside the car make sure the controler is set all the way up on cold. If the temperature cable is broke or popped off of the heater box then warm air will be coming in all of the time.

To check the cable remove the rightside map pocket and move the controler from cold to hot and see if the cable is moving the ear on top of the heater box.

As for the vents in the kick panels they are opened and closed by vacuum.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm just now getting back to the problem and driving the car with most of the dash removed. If I may, let me pick your brain further. My AC is not currantly working. I'ts a relatively new compressor so I'm sure the problem is a freon leak. In light of this, and considering the AC cable is connected and set correctly, when I put the selector on vent it's almost like I put it on heat. Can this happen because the AC isn't working? I'm the original owner and don't remeber this happening in the vent position before. Oh and maybe this is my anwser, the when replacing my heater core, I found the vacuum line from going to the valve in the engine compartment broken. Could this cause the problem? Also, I believe the vacuum line goes through the fire wall with two other vacuum lines. Is this correct? If so, is there a plastic L connection at the fire wall location? Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure if yours is the same as an 80.
1. The vacuum line going into your engine compartment is very important. It goes to the water shutoff to your heater box. If you want cool, you don't want to recirc hot water through there. Fix and test this vacuum line or install a manual valve to shutoff in the hotter months.
2. The valve and flapper in the passenger kick panel is for recirculation. It allows the inside air to be used as makup air. There is also a valve and flapper located in the top of the pass fender near the exit of the blower. This flapper closes when the recirc is opened. Mine had a bunch of leaves preventing this flapper from working.
3. The controller hot/cold lever is manually connected with a Bowden cable to a valve under the dash. When this lever is pushed to the cold position you should feel some resistance. If not, adjust the turnbuckel on the Bowden cable until you do. If there is no resistance you are not closing the flapper and are mixing hot and cold air together. Good luck.
