Default will this help with my timing 81?

i rebuilt my engine 2 years ago, and at that time i was going to collage to be a auto tech. now i am, but i was dumb at taht time. let me explain and if your a guru on the computer i hope you can tell me if im right or not. when i rebuilt i got a edelbrock carb, hooker headers a hypertech prom chip, dynamod ign moduel and a DUI hei cap/rotor, etc.. but those are the main things that matter here. i also did not hook up the o2. So becuse i got rid of the stock carb, the computer could not control gas flow, right? theres no o2, so basicly my compter and the prom are useless now. and scine i rebuilt i can not get it to time right. ill let it run for a couple of minits andset the timing, shut it of and restart it, the timing changed even after it goes into closed loop. keep letting it run and my idle will change from 1000 rpm to 750 rpm. no matter where i put the distrubitor when i time it. so this is my idea, my computer is still tring to put my car in a base time, but it cant anymore becuse of the engine mods ive done, so what will happen if i take out the stock distribtor and put in a hei vacum advance one and take the computer right out of my car. would i then be able to set my timing and hopfully gain some more horse's. i also conveted to a richmond 6 speed from the th350, so the computer dont do anything to the tranny any more---not that it did. man i was dumb back then and spent a lot of money for nothing back then i think. what do you all think? :grouphug:

The computer controls the timing based on signals from the temp sender, MAP, and TPS. Your TPS sensor was built into the carb. At this point you probably better off getting a HEI with vaccum advance. Also if you haven't done it yet you can trash the AIR pump as the computer controls the valves on it, also based on the TPS.

:iagree: The computer hasn't got some of it's inputs working so is probably making a mess of trying to control the timing. It would make sense to, rather than spending time trying to lash it up to work, to just get an earlier HEI on there.
